Best approach in general to a hot upstairs?

Right now as I am reading this I have a team in the attic installing a new ‘zone’ off my 1 unit. I have a two story and the one unit controls the upstairs and down stairs with individual thermostats using motorized dampers in the ducts. Now they are adding a 3rd zone as they say there is...

What got you excited about retirement saving?

37 years in the Hospitality business did me in, was blessed to work for a REIT the last 17 years with excellent benefits, but the travel was hell and the new CEO was the devil, between this website and the bogleheads I discovered the calculators that showed me what was possible. Healthcare was...

Best CD, MM Rates & Bank Special Deals Thread 2023 - Please post updates here

Things I am thinking about….SBV was selling CD’s last week, MM are not FDIC insured. Schwab Savings Account (FDIC insured) paying .48% rate is safer than MM (not FDIC insured) paying over 4%, just have to be aware that you are being compensated for accepting risk and that banks that may have...

    Getting a HELOC before Retiring

I took out a HELOC as it was suggested as a way to manage MAGI for ACA, however the interest rate is currently 7.5%, which was unthinkable last year. Just remember the rate is variable and once you use it you may need a plan B if rates get to where they are now

Poll: When Did You Cut the Cord (Cable and/or Satellite)?

Just cut the cord, including land line phone - kept the internet but bought my own modem/router. Now paying $60/month to cable provider instead of $230. Splitting the cost of YouTube TV 4K with daughter $40/month. We get more channels that we actually watch than we did with the cable provider’s...

    Quiet Vehicles

What he said: I have that 2016 Tacoma which is why the Lincoln Aviator was such a civilized pleasure to drive, someday the Toyota will be replaced by an electric vehicle, my days of needing to move people and pick up mulch are mostly over :)

    Quiet Vehicles

This may not check any of your stated boxes - bought a new Lincoln Aviator and it is the quietest vehicle I have ever owned…it is not without some quality issues which have been corrected, but we love it and bought it specifically for the road trips reason. Prior post mentioning the Lincoln...

    ARK Funds

I own ARKK & ARKG These funds are growing so fast they are already having to move up from small caps to mid caps as they have to find a place to invest the money they are receiving without owning the companies. Can they continue the returns as they move up into the higher cap stock, don't know...

wife is a hot sleeper, so I bought her a chilipad, twin size reconditioned. have had it for two years now, will never go back, nothing else compares, it actually gets too cold for her at times. since it is a twin size it doesn't bother me at all

    Airline affiliated credit card

ya, have this card too, and don't really use it anymore, my WalMart card has better benefits. the mileage points aren't that good a deal for us as they don't let us use them for 1st class upgrades and we don't like to fly coach so the companion fare (coach only) doesn't help us

    Long Term Care Insurance

Well, since she will likely outlive me and need care longer than I will and given the reality (based on studies) of who it is that ends up using the policy and for us it was one or the other, that's what we went with, sorry you don't approve.

    Long Term Care Insurance

I recall a study that said of those in LTC, the majority were female, and it was explained as the male frequently stays in the home and the significant other (female) cares for them, perhaps to the end. I have bought a policy for my wife and not for me, we are playing the odds.

Pretty Sure We’re Never Retiring...Need Advice

I think Snowball gave you good advice...my only comment is that when I read your thread I notice a number of times where you mention the value of something vs. the cost, as if this was cash available to help you out of debt. Of course unless you are willing to sell these things their value is...

Retire at Holiday Inn instead of retirement home?

In some states (CA) the hotels will discourage visits over 30 days as you then become a resident and have rights like an apartment dweller and it makes it tougher for the hotel to oust unsavory patrons who bring in their cats, put potted plants outside their room and cook weird smelling things...

    Zillow?

As a consumer using Zillow for 6-7 years now I find it has some info that Realtor.com does not. Realtor’s I have talked with do not like it at all, not sure what that says. Recently I have found that Zillow shows some properties at the wrong address, don’t know if that’s the public’s error in...

Blow Bag for Rain Drain Pipe

I have had real good luck with this device, it catches all the stuff being flushed from the gutters. You can’t see but there is a grate at a 45 degree angle that keeps stuff from going down the pipe and it is pretty good about being self cleaning. Once in a while the sludge, mold whatever it is...

Age 67 - My plan to avoid Alzheimer's

My Mom has had early onset Alz for 5 years or so, we became acutely aware of it after her husband was killed in a vehicle accident, he had been her caregiver and had kept their little secret. Even in the clutches of the illness she is the most grateful person I know. She thanks God for every...
