MyRA - President Obama's New Plan

So is there anyway to abuse this and funnel money into roth IRAs where you can then invest it how you see fit?

Cash Heavy.. What would you do?

I have been wondering the same thing. I currently have about .75 years income in cash (inheritance) that could be invested right now. I am thinking I should just hold my nose, and hope the market slides as I add contributions.

    Grocery Money - Food Only

Well, I am not quite sure where my annualized numbers are going, but it appears that I am near around 330 for groceries and 100 for eating out (2 parents and newborn). I would really like to push these numbers to 300 and 100. I think with the wife staying at home will really help this.

    Milestone Twofer

That is great OP. Don't worry about going to slow or being behind. You are still in the relatively linear accumulation phase. As time goes on, the compounding effect should start to take hold.

I am pretty certain these folks would still be having quite the retirement, even if they couldn't house sit.

Treasury Bonds - What's Not to Like?

I will really never understand government bond "math". How is it that long term rates went to 15-20 percent in the early 80's when our debt to gdp bottomed near 30%-40%? Yes, inflation concerns were quite different back then, but still, it really makes me wonder sometimes? Are there fundamental...

How $40k can add $1M to your retirement

Your original statement gave the impression that the small element of savers in our consumer society are somehow benefiting at the expense of non savers. All of the improvements we have today are because someone decided to make an investment for tomorrow. The more savers the merrier.

How $40k can add $1M to your retirement

So you actually believe that the fat dumb consumer at a box store is what improves economy and people's standard of living? I think you will actually see the data and economic theory point out that higher rate of savings are directly correlated with higher levels of economic growth.

Respected economist on gold in portfolio

Hoarding onto food/guns & ammo/water is not a bad idea either. Hoarding food doesn't even cost anything as you rotate it into your food supply. Having guns and ammo is good fun and the good old fashioned american thing to do. Having some stored water is just the basics of risk mitigation as no...

Is "bucketizing" a "MIRAGE" of safety

The bogleheads are right. This is mental accounting bias where an investor divides their money up into groups and thinks each one can accomplish a specified function (safety/growth/high inflation/low inflation/etc.). Instead, you should look at the entire portfolio and allocate it such that the...

What would you tell your 22 year old self?

If I could go back, I would tell my self to borrow as much money as I could and invest in S&P otm call options. -Currently 23 and last year was a good one for stocks.

Respected economist on gold in portfolio

As a lover of the precious metals, I can only hope that the majority of investing public keep shying away from Gold/Silver and that the price continues its retreat. To me it is insurance on collapse. Bank accounts, 401k, roths, etc are all digital promises that could all go poof one day. I like...

    5% Future L/T Real Returns?

5% would be an awesome real return. I am planning for 3% real return personally. At the end of the day, all we can do is save as much as possible and let the chips fall where they may.

    Opinions on SWR

I am young (only 23) and my naive goal as of now is to have 100% in equities and only require 1.5%-2% to cover all my expenses. My ultimate goal is to have my portfolio reach escape velocity where my expenses are not enough to hold it back from growing over time.

    Bernanke - Hero or Heal?

How about call them on their bs and let the chips fall where they may. The reason the whole system will collapse is because it is based on fractional reserve banking. Every single $ has 10 claims against it. They signed up to operate in such an unstable fraudulent system and they have to bear...

    Bernanke - Hero or Heal?

Constitutionally Protected? I don't believe government pensions should be covered under any sort of contract law. I didn't sign any thing and was born into this liability, how is that a fair deal. As far as the government workers not getting their pensions, they can still get them, if the people...

Still have not put my money in the market. Advice?

If I were you I would invest it all just at the point when you feel that you will miss the boat to perpetually higher levels in stock markets. When you make this transaction, be sure to inform the rest of us, so we can switch allocation from stocks to bonds. Just kidding. I know the feeling of...

    Double check credit card payments!

I recently signed up for a priceline rewards visa credit card for the sole purpose of getting 2% cash back. I had been very hesitant, as I hate debt and especially credit cards. Anyway, I went with the decision and set everything to autopay with my chase checking.

    Bernanke - Hero or Heal?

Yep. Two most beloved Facts about Andrew Jackson: 1. Paid off the national debt. 2. Killed the National Bank! The Best Quote imo Given quote number 2 and his revoking the national bank's charter, what kind of sick joke were the men at the mint thinking when they stamped Jackson's figure on...

    Bernanke - Hero or Heal?

For all those foolish enough to think that the federal reserve != wall street, please google Jekyll Island 1910 and report back your findings. Bernanke/Fedco exist to protect the interests of the banks and nothing else. They are not there to protect the interests of the people. If they were...

    Bernanke - Hero or Heal?

Anyone who believes that Fed Policy is correct in any shape or form doesn't understand the dynamics of a free market. Outcomes will always end up worse when you have ONE man FIXING the price of the most abundant and important commodity on the planet, money. If there were ever an honest...
