    Executor of Living Trust/Will requirements

Drake My understanding is that where a trust is involved a trustee is in play. When a will is involved, an executor is in play. I believe that executors need lawyers more that trustees do. If you do not understand the distinction then you might need a lawyer, or some library reading. I...

    New Vanguard Account Structure

A few of the differences that I have noticed. First, the settlement account (MMF) does not allow paper checks. Second, the settlement account is a sweep account. It can be a bit more difficult to figure out where the sweep came from. For example if you have dividends go into the sweep account...

    Unknown financial hero

In the early 80s my megacorp came out with a TDSP (Tax Deferred Saving Plan). I later learned that it was a 401k. We were presented this opportunity to save as an additional supplement to the traditional pension. After the meeting, I had the good fortune to chat with an older employee. He...

    Hi... I'm scared

Lisa, Thanks for sharing your fears. They are normal. When you first leave, there will be a shock to your system. It may take several months to get over the initial shock and a few years to find a new normal. It is a great journey. If you want a real education the look into Osher...

58 yrs of age retiring on 9/30/15 after downsizing from lake home

If you are a Flagship Client (more than $1mm) then you can get a free checkup. We expect to see our results from our first checkup early next week. This will be some sort of software generated plan. We will review it for 10 days and then get back and talk with the FP. So far there is no pressure...

    The tax man cometh

Another contrived example. Mr and Mrs Contrived have 90k-95k of income(AGI). A (not insignificant) portion of it is LTCG. The Contriveds have a theoretical portfolio that includes some stock that is 99.99% capital gains and they have some tax deferred IRAs. For the sake of this example, the...

    The tax man cometh

Okay. I get the message loud and clear. If I ever post again, in the interest of clarity, I will not include any contrived examples to demonstrate the point.

    The tax man cometh

I worked on a tax return recently for a couple of new retirees. It is volunteer work so it does not count against my retiree status. They retired in 2014 and they are the perfect retirement tax storm. I was hurt just looking at their numbers. The most significant mistake that they made was...

    2015 New Year Resolutions :)

While thinking about 2015 resolutions as this thread suggests, I stumbled across this article... Six ways to safely spend more in retirement For some reason, I followed the link just to be disappointed by yet another droll list with no redeeming value. In 2014 I have been 'fooled' by far...

Poll:After becoming FI, did it get easier or harder to deal with office BS?

I voted for no change. My office attitude did not change because I caught a severe case of OMY syndrome. With OMY syndrome and a job that was 70% fun, my attitude towards the jobs stayed fairly stable. With chronic OMY syndrome, perception of FI is always just beyond the next rainbow.

Retired Early; Interest - Dividends - Capital Gains use to pay annual expenses?

I would roll it into you liquid checking account for two reasons. Both are tax related. First of all as a new retiree you may or may not have correctly understood your tax liability or you could get some surprises in December. Do not underestimate how different your tax situation may look now...

Not entirely correct. the tests for a qualifying child do indeed reference 24. The tests for a qualifying relative are different. A qualifying relative may be your child. Four tests must be met for a person to be your qualifying relative. The four tests are: 1)Not a qualifying child test...

Pushed out and considering staying out...

From a 50,000 foot standpoint, I would say that you look ok. That said, I would focus on your expenses. This is very important. All MBAs are taught that you get what you measure. MBAs measure, then they cut. I would not suggest laying off your kids. :) Once you start measuring then you can...

    Quirky movies that weren't popular

F4 Be careful. Some of these quirky titles may be hard to remember and find again. Decluttering is a great thing to do, but leave yourself a few anchors. When you are older and some memory fades, leave some physical remnants to cling to. Galaxy Quest may be an exception to this rule :)...

    Afraid to Retire

CherylGrrl I had some of the same problems. Letting go is so difficult. I have had a volunteer plan in place for a while but was waiting to execute it. When a 'package' became available, I took it. A BIG jump. Now I am working with the volunteer gig, in adult literacy. Its tough. I...

The 'bad relationship' metaphor is striking. I cried often on the final day. I had not broken a relationship off like that in over 30 years. Your words ring true. Sundays are very different...as are Fridays. I predict that you will soon fall into some sort of routine. It may be a few...
