    Ready to FIRE?

I'm happy to report that I successfully got laid-off with a generous severance package (5-months free COBRA, 5-months pay as severance, 25% of unvested-RSUs accelerated vesting) on Monday! I'm already enjoying being retired!

Living off dividends = to 0% WR?

Thanks for all the great tips! Especially the tax considerations. I do have my eye on keeping my income in-line with ACA limits. As a married person in California, I the sweet spot seems to be around 60-70k income (which is around my spending level the last 10 years). I think interest and...

Living off dividends = to 0% WR?

Ok, thanks that makes a lot of sense. So I took the yearly dividend and divided by my total balance. Seems my WR = 1.5% Thanks for answering a dumb question. :)

Living off dividends = to 0% WR?

I've realized that the interest and dividends coming from my taxable accounts has been larger than my average spending. Currently, all of them are automatically reinvesting. I plan to retire at the end of this year. I want to switch my taxable accounts to send dividends to my checking and...

    Ready to FIRE?

Just to follow-up: I told my manager that I'm planning to quit this December, and until then, I'll be working on detailed documentation for whomever takes-over my work. He did some research, and just got back to me. Apparently there aren't any layoffs planned now, but his manager always keeps...

Today is the 10 year anniversary of my joining this forum, AND today I told my boss I'm retiring this year (exact date still tbd)! So thankful for all the advice I got on this forum over the last 10 years.

Poll:Do you Own your home outright?

Amazing - this is exactly the same thing we did at the same time! In hindsight, it would have been better to buy stocks in 2009, but it sure didn't feel like a good idea at the time. I don't regret not having a mortgage though.

    Ready to FIRE?

I touched on this a little in post #15. There definitely is the regular "sacrificial headcount" situation at this company. Now I'm leaning toward not telling him a date. I just want to say that I'm leaving soon, but willing to stay a while longer if he'd like me to train my replacements. I...

    Ready to FIRE?

We sure do think alike! Since I've been expecting to retire soon, I've done the following things to our house within the last 3 years: New 40 year roof, new gutters with gutter-guards, new attic insulation (with rodent-proofing), new HVAC ducts, new furnace, new A/C, new paint (inside and...

    Ready to FIRE?

Well, the company is in the process of being purchased by another company with a reputation for cost-cutting and cash-cowing companies. Of course, they are claiming things will be "different" with this merger, but nobody really believes them. That company "sold" this merger to shareholders...

    Ready to FIRE?

I’ve just completed a 1 month vacation/sabbatical, which I earned by working for 16 years at a tech company. I made a point to use this time to “practice” retirement, by not taking exciting trips — just seeing if I can stand not being as busy. Well, I think I passed with flying colors, and...

    Moved into CCRC today

I visited one of the "Covia" CCRCs in Sonoma County, California in 2019, and got a price sheet for the type-A care, which included all meals and on-site memory care, if needed. Lots of activities. Beautiful campus. No shared hallways between units, which I liked. Non-refundable entrance fee...

    Friendship Village Declares bankruptcy

Good point. You can't expect your kids to take care of you. You can't trust LTC insurance to pay-up. You can't trust CCRCs to not go bankrupt.

    Friendship Village Declares bankruptcy

This is disturbing, because I had thought the not-for-profit places were less likely to go under. Otoh, the place I was looking at does not refund your deposit, unless you move out before 2 years. I hope the non-refundable places are more immune to bk. Many people mentioned long waiting lists...

Anyone with a Balanced Portfolio feeling major pain?

I hold a lot of Vanguard Intermediate-Term Tax-Exempt Fund Admiral Shares (VWIUX), as well as stocks. My AA is about 60/40. Sometime last year, I noticed I had enough VWIUX that my monthly income from it (alone) was almost enough to cover all my expenses. I'm thinking about never selling...

Question on Brokered CD's - who really owns them?

If you see a brokered (new issue) CD you like on Vanguard, you can go to that bank's web site and open an account and buy the CD. Is that the relationship you want to have with the bank? I know this doesn't really answer your question. But, I will say that I like that I don't have to open an...
