    Gold as an investment

I have about .7% of my overall portfolio in SPDR GOLD invested since 2019/2020 timeframe and it has had a total gain of about 38%. I can't take any credit for this or claim any knowledge, because this investment was made back when I had a financial advisor before I moved everything from Merrill...

    Trying to understand bond funds

I had an old IRA that I brought from Merrill Lynch to Fidelity. I transferred everything that I could as is (which was most of the investments) and really haven't made any changes to it so the AA went from 60/40 to 80/20. And then recently I moved my 401K to the IRA and everything had to be...

    Refrigerator longevity

We have a 28 year old Maytag side-by-side that is still working. My husband has replaced the defroster a couple of times and part of the icemaker. I don't think that we will see that type of longevity with its replacement.

Talking to my wife about finances

I think most of you guys are being conned Managing the household finances is not that interesting so if you have someone you trust to do it for you...why not? I am pretty sure that is why my genius engineer husband lets me do it...:coolsmiley:

Retired techies, are you still engaged in tech?

Still at it part time I worked as a programmer for almost 32 years with almost 30 of those in the defense contracting field--not very rewarding. So I quit that job and did nothing for 3 years when I was approached to do some contracting for a B2B company and I have been doing that for 6 years...

How to move from Merrill Lynch to Fidelity

Good day, Some background...My husband & I retired early in 2012 at 54 and 52 respectively and we have been clients of Merrill Lynch for over 25 years. I have been wanting to ditch ML for quite some time and my husband has finally agreed. Neither one of us are particularly skilled or interested...

    Lockheed Martin Retiree Medical Cost

We dialed out SS/pension and estimated based on our savings only but like you we did not plan for the insurance costs to be so high. Now we are very glad for ACA (assuming that it will be as advertised) and just hope that will be available to us. If not, one or both of us will be going back to...

    Lockheed Martin Retiree Medical Cost

Holy sh*t is right? Katsmeow, are you trying to make me feel better? How can that insurance company (and the Megacorp that is agreeing to it) justify an almost $50,000 a year premium?

    Lockheed Martin Retiree Medical Cost

Thanks all for the comments. It sounds like we will be signing up for ACA or going back to work. All these years, we thought that we could count on health insurance that would be affordable in retirement because they would be subsidized by the company. My father retired from civil service in the...

    Lockheed Martin Retiree Medical Cost

Thanks W2R. Do you happen to know how many years your friend was at LM? The amount of subsidy that you receive is based on years of service.

    Lockheed Martin Retiree Medical Cost

Thanks, Steve. My company subsidizes too. I am hoping that the price they quoted me is a mistake without the subsidy taken into account. I am supposed to get the answer today.

    Lockheed Martin Retiree Medical Cost

I was wondering if anyone on this forum can help me with a "sanity check" on the cost of LM retiree medical. I took a voluntary layoff early this year from LM and was not yet 55 so I have been paying for COBRA waiting for my birthday in 2014 so I can transfer to the retiree medical. COBRA for...
