    Mortgage and my mind

Studied econ/finance, and know darn well paying off a low rate mortgage is non-optimal, and I am sitting with enough free cash for the first time in my life to be able to kill the mortgage and can’t shake the motivation to pay it off. Damn my reptile brain or whatever is doing that to me...!

    Trading places

This correction was my first 6 digit net worth drop. Didn’t even blink, in fact I found myself thinking about those two old rich dudes at the party in that movie trading places (eddie murphy/dan akroid) who would purposely try to lose money on their bets. I am certainly not trying to lose...

    Vanguard User Interface

Anyone hold both business and personal accounts at vanguard? I’ve held all my account at Tdameritrade for 20 years. I have been making use of the zero-commission vanguard etf until they just discontinued that program this winter. So.... I started moving accounts to vanguard proper, and hitting...

Really need help with sister inheritance

I am going to be in charge of a trust for my sister who is early 30s and has had a bad heroine problem since 16yo. Trust will likely be 100-150, and she is losing her mind, fighting about it in the room of her dying grandfather. Obviously she isnt all there, basically a person who has failed to...

    How is in/out flows measured

When you read in articles that investors moved 10billion in or out of certain market, how is that determined? Seems to me for every sell there is a buy, and should wash transactionally. It can't just be pure market value either. Can't intuitively wrap my mind around that measurement.

What made you truly feel successful?

Many people who are considered tremendously successful by others never feel successful themselves. If you are one of those people, I pity you and you can't really answer my question. For everyone who has had a full life, and reached a point in life where they look around them and decide they...

    Investing for Japan-style future

One of my fears for the US market is a Japan-style 20 year stagnation as Asia and other countries come to the forefront of the world economy. If you believe this is impossible for the US, I won't argue, but please suspend disbelief within this thread if you can. My Question is, what could a...

    CFP value?

Has anyone here ever pursued a CFP AFTER self educating on LBYM/FIRE? I wonder if there is additional "retirement alpha" to be gained by looking into the materials and studying. Its just the kind of weird thing I would think about doing.

    Cake

My wife with all her wisdom once asked me what exactly was going to happen after our savings hits some arbitrary number that I claimed was a "goal" and droned on about for years. "Well," I said with absolutely no significant thought, "I'm gonna buy a cake, of course." So now every goal I make...

    Entering stasis for a decade

Imagine a world, where we have the science to put you to sleep for 10 years. It's safe at ten years or less, you don't age, no side effects, and relative cheap, let's say 20k a head. Would you, at any point in your life, sleep a decade to boost investments? You can bring your spouse and anyone...

    Rethinking DRIP @ TDameritrade

After reading this article, I'm rethinking thge intelligence of using automatic DRIP through my broker.... Thing is, doing it manually also create drag assuming a rising market on average. Might have to transfer assets to MFs in order to satisfy my OCD need for efficiency...

    Standard deviation time frame

I'm studying college level finance right now, with the hopes of better understanding my retirement savings and the market. Getting a refresher course in st.dev., etc. For broad index etf's like VIG, VEU, VWO, what is an intelligent amount of time over which historical stdev should reasonably...

    Mary Jane

    Efficient Frontier

So I'm exploring efficient frontier math, trying to understand what profound ideas it can teach me. When to coast?

I'm 37, planning to stop saving heavily at 40 and let compounding do the work while I either dial back work or dial up spending or both. For others planning similar, how are you analyzing the numbers to decide when and how much you need? Assumption, retirement funds go untouched, or slightly...

Firecalc for portfolio growth during contributions
