Waited Too Long... How to Convince Spouse We are OK to Retire

Recommend Rick Ferri financial review (I think review cost $750)....high credibility and well known (show spouse books). He has a great perspective given the breadth of clients he has seen and years in industry. In your case, far more useful in talking through having enough than allocation...

Undereducated and misdirected in life. Help.

You are doing great! The number one item in retirement planning is expense control. You are killing it in this area! The target 2034 fund is a great suggestion. The biggest thing with investing is navigating the noise....thinking others are beating market, hearing how great a stock is doing...

Blow the dough before pulling the plug?

The decision was made to stay, don’t agonize over what is in the past. Treat your self to the upgrades. Approach your work everyday knowing you are FI and should you decide to leave, you still can (even paying insurance). Frankly, this current assignment/role will better help you navigate the...

Taking a job without telling Employer I plan to FIRE

At will employment (in the U.S.) ... things can change in a hurry...do not overthink. Simply share you plan to work for a long while. BTW, I could not imagine expecting someone to commit to that when hiring....we are all replaceable at work....not in our families.

45 yrs old | Married | 2 Kids | Is it Time To Quit?

I don’t post too often, but like to read frequently. Congratulations on your success. Saved like a pessimist and invested like an opportunist! I echo the 72t to pull down qualified dollars for liquidity .... and to manage taxes.

Thinking of retiring with high school aged kids

This thread is really helpful on providing aspects on retiring when kids are in school. My spouse and I both have plans to early retire - with oldest just starting high school and others being in middle and elementary. The comments are suggesting a positive experience, which I have wondered...

    62 with a 12 and 14 year old....$5million plus rental income

I am owner of apartments as well and have similar debate....my worry is more on unknown liability (fire, flood, Covid, etc) putting a dent in cash flow. Cashing out would reduce risks, but cash flow reduction and diversification would be missed. Highly recommend a management company, which is...

Are the higher powers telling me something?

StuckinCT, have followed your posts the past few years. Just curious, why has your investment portfolio only marginally grown the last four years. I had impression you are largely stocks and would have expected higher increases. Don’t get me wrong, great nest egg.

Three Years in retirement, Should have done it sooner

Thanks for the update, Senator. I often wondered how things were going as I followed your posts before you pulled the ripcord. I had assumed things were going well, which sounds like is the case. In another recent post, you mentioned that you likely went too early. Sounds like all has been...

How many years did it take for your 401k to hit 1 million ?

Great point. A couple of years ago I started putting a deferred tax liability on our personal financial statement to get all numbers, in particular investable assets, closer to a post tax basis as values between Roth, post tax and 401k are apples and oranges when adding together.

25% of annual spend is a lot for piece of mind (1/4 of 4% withdrawal rate). I appreciate piece of mind, but would have suggested you work into it rather then all upfront. I am guessing acquaintances did not share their portfolios with you, so it would be going off of their perceptions...

Intro and Fired up for Fire

Interesting perspectives on concentration of risks...individuals will live off of one income and need 90%+ of that...which all comes from one employer (company). A side real estate business that is properly managed and properly levered can position a person well for the long-term by building...

Anyone move from the city to a ranch/farm? - day dreaming here...

Hi Dvalley, I grew up on a farm but lived in cities ever since leaving after high school. After the last move we opted for an acreage near the city (priced more like development land). We were somewhat concerned about the leap....especially for my wife. Have not regretted at all...in fact we...

    21 Year Old Checking In

35, and on track to retire by 50

Interesting comment, Senator. I have watched colleagues go through what I call the great asset divide late in life and at a surprise by many. It is somewhat morbid to build a plan around it, but even in my ER plan I contemplated if it could weather that type of storm if it came up. Probably...

Hello, Out from the shadows ... I am addicted to the forum

You have correctly interpreted the cash flows. You are also correct about all investments being tied up in the qualified savings plans. A few years back when we made the first purchase we debated whether to save less and pay down debt or to save in taxable accounts. Eventually we concluded that...
