Activity might be the most important thing.

My weekly routine is a 1.5 mile walk and 1 mile swim on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It unfortunately does nothing for my weight (a bit over obese limit BMI), but it keeps my joints mostly painless and helps keep me moving pretty much effortlessly despite my weight. I have been doing this...

HSA limit when only one parent and kids qualify

I retired last summer and I am now covered by my ex employer's retiree health plan, which is not a HSA qualified HDHP plan. My wife is still working and has a HDHP plan through her employer, which also covers our two underage kids. The question I can't find clear answer for is: Can my wife...

    Class of 2022

Informally told the boss about my July 2022 plan a few weeks ago. Wanted to give him ample time to decide about a successor. Boss acted like was not even slightly surprised. For sure, the days seem to pass impossibly slow since then. All kinds of issues to fight, from labor shortages to...

    Class of 2022

Since we are "not" counting: I just hit the one year to my last w@rking day milestone. Official RE day still July 1. Effectively 215 w@rk days left given the fact I try to use up all the accumulated PTO.

    Deferred pay and PIA

Very good point. According to my 2020 W2 I did pay medicare tax for the part of the compensation that went to the non-qualified rabbi trust (#1 in my OP). So even though I did not pay SS tax from it being over the max already, that part was FICA taxed. The top 20% of my DB pension (#3 in my...

    Deferred pay and PIA

That's useful to know. You did not directly answer the other part of my question, so am I understanding correctly that SSA does not really care if I am still employed and actually working for the FICA taxable income? I will have another 9 years to go after retirement to have the full 35 years...

    Deferred pay and PIA

I am 56 and starting preparations to take early retirement in 14 months, around the time I turn 58. I will have only 26 years of FICA payments at the time of my RE, so I am trying to figure out how much will my SS PIA be reduced due to ER. The area of uncertainty to me is the impact of various...

Did any of you regret early retirement or is anyone worried about leaving too early?

Different situation but the similar end result. I will be retiring next year to raise our young kids. At that point my DW will be returning to work for potentially another 20 years for what she says. Very helpful for continuing employer HI coverage but not really necessary from FI standpoint...

Did any of you regret early retirement or is anyone worried about leaving too early?

But isn't it typical in most Megacorps that your best year is your last year, regardless of the age? At least seems to me the case in mine. Any OMY would be same or higher total compensation than any prior year was. That, outside of the obvious layoffs and other involuntary departures.

Virtually everything that I have bought from eBay or Etsy from domestic sellers is shipped via USPS Priority Mail. Maybe a day slower but remarkably cheaper.

    Dental Insurance FWIW

Here in our rural area we have a shortage of dentists so they don't participate in any discount programs. Only two dentists in our county of 16,000. Guess I will be stuck paying for an insurance once RE.

New Rav4 purchase falls apart .... not sure what to do

I have had a similar battery issue develop with my 2018 RAV4 hybrid. It gets driven only 4-5 times per month right now and we had two recent occurrences of the dead battery after just 7-8 days of sitting in the garage. The Toyota dealership looked into it and could not find anything wrong but...

    Class of 2022

Not counting days yet but months - 21 to go. Having said that, right now due to COVID the megacorp business is NOT good and it is quite depressive to work every day. I keep calculating the difference between Feb 2021 vs July 2022. Right now it seems at least $500k net loss if I quit any time...

South Carolina - do homes not have gutters?

In our area in rural MN more than half of the houses don't have gutters. This is despite the fact nearly all houses have basements. My house does not have them but should have since I have minor water leaks through basement walls if we get over 0.5" rain fairly fast. The house is a tall...

    Intermittent Fasting, Yes it Works

It seems I was actually eating too much lean protein. It is important part of the keto diet to get 70% of the calories from fat and too much protein can push you off ketosis. It pretty much means that typical lean meats that I was accustomed to before dieting are out of the picture. After...

No difference if I have terminated or not. The survivor pension benefit prior to me starting the pension is the same.

Pension single life + term life

Yes. It has a 66.7% automatic spousal benefit that will start the month I would have turned 65, if I die before I get my first pension payment. I thought every pension has something like that.

Pension single life + term life

Yes. Just looking to replace the same amount my wife would get after my death if I selected the 50% survivor benefit. My wife is a lot younger than me so she will very likely outlive me by couple of decades, but I am just looking at this pension as one of many pieces of the FI puzzle. The...

Pension single life + term life

I know there has been several threads discussing similar topics in the past, but I have a bit different angle in my question. I am 56 years old male planning on retiring early 2021. My megacorp pension payments will start after my 65th birthday. I am contemplating the following options: 1...

    Intermittent Fasting, Yes it Works

I have only been on this diet for a bit over three weeks now and I have been extremely careful about not breaking any "rules". Two moderate size meals, in the beginning and at the end of my 4-5 hour eating period or alternatively one big and one small meal. And zero snacks in between the...

    Intermittent Fasting, Yes it Works

I'm working from home as well. Back in the office I got some 5000 steps per day just from walking from meeting to another one. Now everything is video conferences which actually fits much better to me personally, but no walking. I actually do some short (0.5 mi) walks for a break or just go...

    Intermittent Fasting, Yes it Works

With 11 hour work days I really can not find more time for exercise except weekends (which I will be doing). During the week I spend 60 to 90 minutes every evening playing sports with my young son. Biking, shooting hoops, batting practices, kicking soccer ball, etc. Does not really break the...
