Medicare, COBRA and ACA... Oh my!

That would really stink. The smart play would be to maintain coverage.

Medicare, COBRA and ACA... Oh my!

As I understand it, you have 60 days to elect for coverage. If something happens, you can sign up and be covered retroactively. If something happens on day 61+, it’s on your dime.

    Roth conversion or gains harvesting

This would be from reg 401k to Roth 401k, not Roth IRA.

    Roth conversion or gains harvesting

The Rule of 55 should shelter me from the penalty shouldn’t it?

    Roth conversion or gains harvesting

I had planned on COBRA because I wanted to keep my current physician. On previous trips through the ACA websites, I couldn’t find a plan that included him. Revisiting it this afternoon, I was able to find some plans he does accept so maybe that’s the way to go. I can see Exchme’s point on...

    Roth conversion or gains harvesting

(Apologies for the rambling post) Once again I seek the wisdom of the Oracles of ER. Odds are high that I will be hanging it up this year. FireCalc green lights my plan with a withdrawal rate that can exceed my expenses by nearly 2:1. Since I’ve made too much this year to do any real tax...

    TD to Schwab migration

My TD accounts are slated to be assimilated into Schwab sometime during Q3. Not long ago, the company moved our 401Ks to Fidelity. Part of me want to move the TD accounts to Fidelity and have everything in one place for simplicity since I have to learn their system anyway. There are a lot of...

Bank teller asks the wrong question

I once had a teller ask if I had plans for all that “extra” money in my checking account. I was caught a little of guard because the account maybe had $2,500 in it. I guess she thought that was a lot of money at the time ?!? I told her all that money was already gone, the checks just hadn’t...

Texas (Dallas Area) and Affordable Care Act Plans

Thanks for starting this topic. I too am a Texan looking at health plans with an eye towards retiring next year. I really like my PCP but of the 147 plans BCBS offers in the area, my doc takes exactly ZERO of them. I guess I need to look into Ambetter, Friday, Molina, Oscar etc…to see if...

How to get around Physical Therapy r/o

Definitely try this. I was getting great PT from a place I liked for a recent injury. I asked about getting some sessions for an old unrelated injury. I mentioned it would probably be without insurance. He said he had 12 people on staff that did nothing be process insurance claims and it...

Retiring soon - Cobra VS ACA Bronze

Similar situation. Looking at pulling the plug soon. Currently have BCBS. Looked into ACA options for when COBRA runs out. Of the 147 plans I could choose from my current doctor took none of them.

New Observation... days/holiday weekends get fuzzy

I was out for a while on short term disability and got to that point. Pretty relaxing not stressing about what day it was. One day I looked at the calendar and saw I had a doctor’s appointment 3 weeks away and thought to myself “you’re stifling me!”

    When to take my RMD

That’s my guess. I could call and inquire. The transaction history on both accounts show $0.00 for the transfer. I had to check the unrealized gains tab in the taxable account to find the new basis.

    Zero exemptions still not enough!

Every year I do a rough, dry run of my taxes on July 4th as that’s about half way through the year. I just double the YTD taxable earnings, fed tax withheld, dividends & interest etc... add in realized capital gains to date and see if it lines up. If I’m under running, I take that amount...

    When to take my RMD

I did the in-kind transfer to maintain my position. The transfer was AAPL on 11/18/21. My new basis shows to be $153.49. For the mathematically inclined: Brokerage chart shows Open: $153.71 High: $158.67 Low: $153.05 Close: $157.87 First one to reverse engineer the methodology gets a gold...

    When to take my RMD

I have an inherited IRA and take in-kind distributions, moving X shares to my taxable account to maintain my position. I cover the taxes through extra withholding from ... that which we dare not speak its name. Is it better to move the shares when the price is: A) down, establishing a lower...

Any guys give up on their hair?

Gave up on it. Bought a $25 Wahl clipper and went full buzz, no guard. Paid for itself the first time I used it. 30 years on, it’s still going strong. Pocketed a lot of haircut money across 3 decades.

    Do you think 2023 is 1929, 1966, 2000, etc?

Since that’s the year I’d like to hang it up...yep. Sounds about right.

Risk of Sitting on Large (Long Term) Cap Gains?

Thank you for this link! I’ve been wanting to do some tax gain harvesting to help out with some oversized gains in my taxable account. I’ve been noodling on this for the past 6 months or so. I made a spreadsheet that calculates how much income (and freed up principle) I can generate and...

    ??? with Firecalc

Double check that you have the Pension Income button checked (it defaults to Off Chart Spending). Having that number (potentially tens of thousands of dollars) input as an expense instead of income will impact the results. That has bitten me more than once.

    Mint mobile app error?

I noticed something odd with the Mint app (iOS). The net worth calculation is off. The aggregate numbers for cash and investments are correct but the sum is off. I looked through the settings to see if perhaps I’d designated an account to be ignored in the calculation but didn’t find...

Schwab in talks to buy TDAmeritrade

I must be small beans. I’ve got 4 accounts at TD and haven’t received a thing[emoji848]. Admittedly, it’s not much by their standards. I guess they’ll get around to telling the small fries eventually 🤣.

How to retire early - A couple retired in the early 40's

One commenter hit it on the head: “We both live the way our paychecks allows us to. That would be very hard trying to cut back” Most of these people don’t get it and likely never will. More power to them - someone needs to keep those SS coffers filled.
