    15 Years Retired

My 15 year journey can be summed up in six words: go go, go slow, and no go. After my DW passed away in 2005, I kept w*king because it seemed the thing to do. Well, life is funny, because some years later I met a lady who was also widowed and we married. I waited for my profit sharing to be...

IRS requests not to file now

Last year, California and a few other states issued either inflation relief funds or state tax refunds. The IRS has not yet sorted if these are taxable or not. We received a 1099-MISC for the $700 that we got. Turbotax let me enter on the Federal return, but on the CA state return there was a...

    Cash gift to sons

In about a year or so, an annuity that DW has will mature. She wants to gift the proceeds of about $100K to each son. This annuity is as a result of their father's life insurance policies that she has never needed. The sons have no idea that this annuity exists. It will be a total surprise to...

Cash in annuity when it matures?

DW has a 10 year annuity that matures in 4 years, The options are: 1. Cash in the annuity when it matures and give the money to her sons 2 Do a 1035 exchange for a new one. I ran the numbers through TT, and we would owe $24 K in taxes if we cashed it in. Fortunately, we do not need the money...

    2020 form 709

The IRS had just released the 2020 form 709 for gifts. The instructions are still in draft form. The gift I made was well below the limit, and there was a part of me that would think, "how will they find out?". I would rather file the form than worry;D

    A question about BOOKS

    10 years retired

Today is the 10th anniversary of my retirement. I only waited long enough in January 2009 to be sure my profit sharing (7.5%of my salary) was deposited to my 401K. The next day we were on an airplane to Santiago, Chile for 14 day tour of South America. It has been an exciting 10 years...

    I think I get a pension!

I was checking my FIDO account, and a new line item called Retirement Plan B showed up. I did some checking, and even found my papers from 1985 about my pension. Years ago, I called, and was told I did not get one. Well, in talking to FIDO, who just took this over in April, they confirmed I was...

    Need Alternate RMD strategy

I will not complain, as my IRA's have done very well. I will be 79 this month, and will have to take an RMD of 20K to 25K this year. This pushes me into the 25% bracket, along with making 85% of my SS taxable. I am looking for any alternate methods to try to minimize the bite. I looked at Roth...

    QROC annuity?

I am sorry, but I cannot find how to start a new thread, but I have a question. Today my broker was pushing a QROC annuity that she claimed I can move part of my IRA to it, and not have to take RMD's on it. Has anyone heard of this? When I hear annuity, I tend to run the other way.
