    One or more Investment Firms?

Thanks for the response swakyaby. You don't need to give the name, but was the firm that locked you out for so long a reputable firm like Fidelity or Vanguard? I can't imagine something so extreme happening at one of the reputable firms. When I have had issues in the past they seem to focus on...

    One or more Investment Firms?

I do have a checking account with Bank of America and always have several months of living expenses in the account. I also have check writing ability with my Fidelity account, so I should have access to money even if one of the entities goes off line for some period of time. I guess my concern...

    One or more Investment Firms?

I am 66 years old and recently retired. My wife is 65 years old and retired many years ago. We recently consolidated all of our financial assets into our Fidelity Investments account (a wide variety of mutual funds, stocks, money markets, etc.). We have about $4.5M in financial assets (about 75%...

    Long Term Care

It has been 1 ½ years since my last significant post. As an update, I retired late last year after 39+ years with a megacorp. It wasn’t fully on my terms, but I did receive a severance package which was certainly welcome. I am 65 (and now on Medicare) and my DW will turn 65 in a couple months...

Holding on one more year in Information Technology

Age discrimination is clearly present in the working world, and the lack of respect for experienced, seasoned workers seems to be increasing. It is the worst that I have observed in my 38 1/2 years working. Is that a battle you really want to fight at this point in your career? I agree with...

Hoping to retire later this year. Need your thoughts.

I noticed that many are calculating an income stream based on a 3% or 4% withdrawal on $4.6M. I believe $2.6M of that will be in retirement accounts (401K, Rollover IRA, other IRAs) and won't be accessible for several years (until OP turns 59 1/2) without penalty.

Think I'm OK, but not overly confident

Midpack, I think you are on target. Financial readiness in retirement is a personal decision. There are so many factors that influence the decision, and only the individual who has the complete picture can make a full assessment. That said, it still is helpful to get opinions from others even if...

Think I'm OK, but not overly confident

Thanks to everyone for your responses. All of the feedback makes total sense to me. I think my hesitancy is largely an emotional issue. After working for 38 1/2 years, I do feel some anxiety about closing that chapter of my life. The finality of it spooks me a bit. Many of those 38 1/2 years...

Think I'm OK, but not overly confident

Sorry for the long post. Part of it is anxiety venting on my part for sure. It’s been about 1 year since my original post, and to tell you the truth, not much has changed other than being 1 year older and even more anxious to move onto my next chapter. I am now 63 (will be 64 in three...

    Spending input in FIRECalc

Thanks Midpack and rodi for your replies. Shouldn't that be clearly stated where one enters "Spending" in the "Start Here" box? Usually when I think of spending I don't put income taxes in that category. I do put property taxes and sales taxes there, but not income taxes.

Think I'm OK, but not overly confident

Thanks to all for the additional inputs. Very helpful and much appreciated. Sunset, the approximately $66K of pension income is in addition to the savings. I have thought about the RMD, and your suggestion to execute some Roth IRA conversions before SS sets in is a good one. By far, most of my...

Think I'm OK, but not overly confident

Hi all, I am 62 (will be 63 in three months) and my wife is 62 as well (several months younger than me). I am currently working (my wife stopped working over a decade ago). We have three children (one fully launched and two currently in professional school). I have been working for about...
