Do I-Bonds belong in a portfolio?

No offense, but willfully sacrificing growth in any significant portion of your portfolio is not a good strategy. Giving up 1-5 years liquidity to make zero return worsens that. Being happy to do so is like saying "Thank you sir! May I have another?" as you get paddled. Remember, if you hold for...

Do I-Bonds belong in a portfolio?

With all due respect, I-Bonds put zero dollars in your pocket, except for what you put in. Zero real return, zero alpha.

Do I-Bonds belong in a portfolio?

Good deals don't come with puny purchase limits. OTOH, they have minimums.

Do I-Bonds belong in a portfolio?

Maybe you need to go back to the drawing board if your education has left you with the notion that staying even with inflation is good.

Why Aren't I-Bonds Getting More Attention?

$40 k is far less than I dedicate to good investments. It's also far less than I would keep in cash if inflation wasn't sky high.

Do I-Bonds belong in a portfolio?

No liquidity for one year. Lose 3 months interest if redeemed before 5 years. 0% fixed rate when all other interest rates skyrocketing. Interest earned just keeps pace with inflation. It may sound great, but that's only because inflation is historically high. At this rate, you put a dollar in...

Why can I not stop thinking about paying off my mortgage?!?!

Do you have an opinion of your own? Or do you just blindly follow others with no analysis of your own? Do you believe everything you read? If so, why not believe me? If not, why not? I don't make my living writing blogs? Do you have any thoughts on the idea I promoted in my post?

Why can I not stop thinking about paying off my mortgage?!?!

I don't care what you or anyone else says. Using discounted dollars to pay a fixed debt protects against inflation. Protection = hedge. Therefore a mortgage is an inflation hedge. Your argument is a distinction with no difference and seems to be more about semantics than the strategy. I let it...

Why can I not stop thinking about paying off my mortgage?!?!

The money that we might have used to pay cash is in a taxable account where it provides liquidity if needed. We also have IRA and Roth accts but the IRA is taxable and we want the Roths to go to our heirs. Without the taxable acct we wouldn't have a liquid account besides savings just in case...

What do you think of the striped lawn look?

That lawn is cut too short. I just accidentally found that same image, ironically in an article entitled "Cutting Grass Too Short: The Most Common Mowing Mistake" In that article, he says: "Most family lawns look beautiful when they’re between 3cm – 6cm high." which is equivalent to 1.2" to 2.4"...

What do you think of the striped lawn look?

I use a push reel mower with rollers which does leave stripes but they are hard to see unless you are far above the lawn. The picture shown in post #1 of this thread is from a height. When looking at ballfields or racetracks, the cameras are at a height. If you're walking or driving by, you...

Car Racing fans - Sunday May 29th

Don't get hung up on the names. They've never been stock- they've included safety mods, performance mods and were lightened pretty much from day 1. Indy cars race at other places besides Indy. IMSA includes prototypes which are mass produced. Funny cars aren't funny. And exactly what is Formula...

Car Racing fans - Sunday May 29th

There is a formula e series featuring open wheel electric cars. When it first started, batteries didn't have the range, so they would swap entire cars! Now one car and it's batteries can go the distance but conservation is needed. There are some big name racers in the series. I tried to watch it...

Why Aren't I-Bonds Getting More Attention?

$10,000 ---> $29,000 over 21 years, with interest compounded semi-annually (as I-Bonds are) is 5.1% annual interest. Not bad, but not great. There are many other investments which would have returned multiples of that over the same period, albeit with somewhat higher risk. Given 0% fixed rate...

Why Aren't I-Bonds Getting More Attention?

They assure your money will keep pace with inflation, at least inflation as determined by the government. But with purchase limits and liquidity restrictions, they are not a screaming good deal. Remember, the fixed rate component is zero. How long will it be before the Treasury raises the fixed...

    Forecasting I-Bond earnings

I'm inferring based on this paragraph from the website: The interest is compounded semiannually. Every six months from the bond's issue date, all interest the bond has earned in previous months is in the bond's new principal value. Interest is earned on the new principal for the next six months...

    Forecasting I-Bond earnings

correct calculations now included I'll let this thread die after I confess that I put out bad info with the tables I posted herein. I have 100% confidence in this table (below) and realize the return is pretty good after all, since the interest is compounded every 6 months. The interest is...

    Forecasting I-Bond earnings

Updated table There were two errors in my first analysis, which didn't really make a difference in the XIRR, but here's an updated version with another way to specify the return.

    Forecasting I-Bond earnings

I appreciate all your comments. Risk is personal and relative. My risk tolerance increased after realizing we were in a near-zero return environment. I cope by reducing my exposure to any one investment. I own no bonds and use investment-grade real estate to mimic that stabilizing effect. I've...

    Forecasting I-Bond earnings

I just checked these out here. The bonds have two rate determiners: 1. The fixed rate (currently 0.00%) for the life of the bond. 2. The CPI-U inflation rate determined on May 1 and Nov 1 (currently 3.56%) The composite rate is shown, but when the fixed rate is 0.00% (as it will be for the life...

1031 out of company stock into etf?

The only way I'm aware of to defer cap gains on a stock sale is using a Qualified Opportunity Zone, but you'd be buying real estate. Real estate is a great diversifier and there are many passive QOZ investments where you wouldn't need to manage the properties your self.

The True Cost of Upgrading Your Phone

Memory is not that expensive. This is "value pricing" aka whatever the market will bear. I object to such obvious and blatant disconnects between cost and price.
