What Fund to pick for Retired Mom?

My mother's financial situation was similar to yours when I invested her $62k, 50% in Wellesley and the other half in VOOG. That was the Spring of 2018. I asked my mother what her goals were with the money. She didn't want or need to draw from it but wanted to leave something for...

Poll: When Did You/Are You Planning to Start Soc Sec?

I will start at 62 in 14 months. We adopted a son who will turn 10 on the same day I turn 62. As most know he will get half of my benefit until he graduates high school at 19 (We held him back in kindergarten for various reasons). That skews the numbers for us a great deal.

How has your retirement spending differed from your projections?

I spend more on groceries than I expected. At least 50% more. We cook at home the vast majority of the time. That has been good for my weight ( I have lost over 20 pounds since I retired on May 30th 2018) but I underestimated how much that would cost. I also spend more on auto fuel...

    Stock Picking 2021

I picked a small bio tech NWBO to hold long term. It could go to zero or be a grand slam. I added MSFT during the mini-dip and put my Mother back into T for the 7%+ dividend. All of this was done during rebalancing.

For those who self-manage their nest egg - what funds do you use??

I moved all investments to VWELX (Wellington) when things started going bad. Asset allocation didn't change a lot. I moved a little bit more to cash/money market but bonds stayed about the same. I did this mainly to let someone smarter than me manage the bond portion of my portfolio and get...

Retiring with children - dependent Soc Sec

She is already collecting SSDI which is her FRA amount. The reason it will impact my wife when I pass is my SS is considerably more so she will switch to mine. As far as I know, and I hope I am wrong, she will get the amount I received by starting at age 62 rather than a larger amount if I...

Retiring with children - dependent Soc Sec

I would only impact mine. She can wait to take her SS since our son will only get half of one or the other. But impacts her if she lives longer than I do because my social security even at 62 is twice as much as hers at her full retirement age.

Retiring with children - dependent Soc Sec

I am only 60 so two more years, but on Feb 19th of this year we adopted our 9 year old son. It was BY FAR the high point of 2020. That changed my plan from a year to year decision on when to start SoSec, to starting at 62. Right now my benefit at age 62 will be ~$2000 and change. So our...

Beeman FTS and Crossman Premiers. My Weihrauch loves JSB exacts. I haven't tried JSBs with the AA s410 but I should.

    Getting Rid of Rabbits

Local ordinances will be the problem for airgun use in suburban Texas. But he/she will only be in trouble if a neighbor complains. Discreet shots from an open window, being careful so no projectile leaves the homeowners property will mitigate the risk of problems with neighbors and police...

    Getting Rid of Rabbits

I own an Air Arms S410 in .22. It is so ridiculously accurate o consider it cheating. LOL My go to is a Weihrauch HW80 in .20. It has dispatched countless squirrels and starlings caught committing acts of depredation against my wife's bird feeders. Cottontails are very easy to out down...

    This weather is awful!! 2008-2021

I went to Mineral Wells Tx today for an errand. The temperature reach 110 but was mostly 108 for the hour I was there. 18 miles east in Weatherford TX it was about 101. Odd to see the large of a variation in such a short distance.

Wow, it’s getting really scary in Texas - and everywhere else!

Parker County is significantly under reported. Our county judge is under some local heat for this and they are working to "help the state" fix these numbers. /eyeroll But you are correct. Parker County is doing much better than Tarrant, Dallas, Denton and Collin counties

Wow, it’s getting really scary in Texas - and everywhere else!

Between my wife and I, we have 8 friends or family who have COVID-19 and they have all been infected in June. One more will be tested tomorrow. Her husband is in the hospital with it. Only one has died so far. I live 30 miles West of Fort Worth.

    Who here takes aspirin daily?

I take two 81mg aspirin each day along with a handful of other pills. I got my 2nd stent on May 6th a few days before turning 60. When I got the stint I was put on Effient which is a blood thinner/anticoagulant.

Most efficient way to buy/own physical gold and metals?

I am thinking about dipping my toe into (probably) silver by buying one or two hundred $$$ worth each month. I checked out some websites this afternoon based on info in this thread. The premium on most of the coins was steep. Some vendors were charging 50% over spot or more. One site...

Born in 1960? Expect a Big Social Security Cut

I am a 1960 model too. This is just great. I am assume we have people on this message board that turned 60 during the worst of the 2008-2009 downturn. Any testimonials on how their social security was impacted?

    Deferring SS

The reason I will take it closer to 62 than 67 or 70 is we adopted our grandson this past Feb 19th. Tomorrow, May 16th, he turns 8 and I turn 60. We share a birthday. My wife currently receives SSDI and he will receive half of her benefit once we have his new birth certificate to show...

Playing games online with grandson different locations

If your grandson plays Fortnight dont be afraid to give it a try. I don't play it but I regularly watch the grandkids play. If you want to give it a try I would play it on a PC rather than PS4, XBOX or phone. Mouse and keyboard will be easier for our generation. You will be a "newbie" and...
