Unexpected IRS 2024 Quarterly Vouchers Received.

Tell the IRS to stuff it, and pay via a 100% withholding IRA withdrawal, instead of quarterly tax payments. You could do that in December, once you know your liability.

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) - 2021 version

All this DVR talk here recently has got me thinking about my Tivo. I have had it for 5-6 years I guess, and I was thinking that we actually have not recorded anything on it in 1 or 2 years. This makes me wonder if I will even bother replacing it when it dies someday. These days, we rarely...

Is US Mobile a good carrier?

^^^^ Yes, the $15 10GB plan does not include hotspot, but you can add 5GB of hotspot data per month for another $2.5/month.

Is US Mobile a good carrier?

^^^^ Goto the USM website and click the chat button if you have specific questions. When you are out of the 1GB, it stops working. You can top off from their app. Personally, I would not use USM for overseas data, simply because people have reported problems getting it going. I have used...

Is US Mobile a good carrier?

Re Verizon / T-mobile / AT&T Everyone’s experience is different, but from what I have read, in general, Verizon has the best coverage, urban and rural areas, for getting a signal, at the expense of speed. T-mobile has good coverage in cities, less so (or none) in rural areas, and the best...

I see a lot written about FIRE can you explain what each letter means?

You now have the surface definition, but the deeper definition means different things to different folks. Such as, what financial means to you, what does independent mean to you, etc. These threads all explore different aspects of all that, and I am constantly learning new things here. Since...

Is US Mobile a good carrier?

^^^ I too have been with them for a couple of years. I recently moved us to the 10GB $15/month (tax included) plans. The 10GB is high speed, and when that runs out, you are at 1Mb/sec, unlimited. It's a no brainer for $15. The only thing you miss on that plan is hotspot, but that can be...

What is the best way to pay estimated Federal Taxes in Retirement?

^^^ Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but can someone please answer my question about NC taxes? If true, the I assume that I do a 100% withholding distribution for Fed taxes, and another 100% withholding distribution for NC taxes? Thanks

    Fast food _McD's fish sandwich..shrinking?

I am a connoisseur of la fish sandwiches. +1 for the Culver's cod sandwich, and +1 for the crispy Arby's fish sandwich (not their other two fish sandwiches). I will also add the Bojangler from Bojangles's (only available around Lent).

    Anyone still using Quicken 2014?

I have Quicken 2017 (the last one with no subscription) on my Mac, running Sonoma. Runs great. I got it on eBay, where they occasionally show up. I actually have not used it for quite awhile. I wrote my own "Quicken" in Excel a year or so ago, and use that now instead.

    BPH (enlarged prostate) Diagnosis

Been taking Tamsulosin for years, now on double dose and it does not work well any more. Going to have a PAE procedure done this summer, after I get on Medicare (current insurance does not cover it, and it would be $13K now). From what I have read, the PAE procedure has the least side effects...

What is the best way to pay estimated Federal Taxes in Retirement?

I would like to try this lazy person method next year, when I will have a ton of Federal taxes to pay, due to Roth conversions. Can someone please verify if this works for NC taxes too? Thanks.

    IRMAA and inheritance

I had the appraisal done just after the date of death, since I believed it was required while handling the estate. It actually was not, but I am glad I got it done. It came in a little higher than what the estate agent said it should have been, given the poor condition of the house, but that...

    IRMAA and inheritance

I am finding confusing info about this on the web. If I inherit a bunch of money, and a house, this year, will it affect my IRMAA in 2026? Some sites say yes, others say inheritance is not included in MAGI. Technically, I inherited the house in 2023, but sold it this year. And I liquidated...

    Bonds Suc&k...

It seems to me that the point of bonds is to have a more stable (than stocks) component of a portfolio. Perhaps a better choice, at least lately is to use a CD ladder or money market, depending on which is currently yielding better.

    Clogged Drains: Plumbing Knowledge?

My experience does not flush with this (sorry, could not resist). We had 3 builder grade (I think they were American Standard), 1.6 G toilets, from the late 90s. For years and years, I would be unclogging one of the three about once a week. I had always assumed we had messed up pipes. I...

LinkedIn is for people who w*rk. I deleted my profile about a year after I retired. I got tired of getting contacted by recruiters.

    Bathroom remodel, shower size?

We have been looking at a similar remodel to the OP, and our problem is no one wants to even look at doing it unless we spend at least $30K. Ridiculous!

    Carvana v CarMax v Vroom

One other difference between CarMax and Carvana: I am administering by sister's estate, and I want to sell her car. I could not find the title for her car, so sent away to the DMV for a duplicate title. Now I have learned that Carvana insists that the title be in my name (the executor), not...
