    Military retirees?

I retired from the US Navy as an E6 after completing 20 years on Active Duty. I had the Navy pension and some investments at that time. That was 20 years ago, this past Spring. Last month I got my first Social Security check. I did some research on my SS account. and I found that since I was...

    Military retirees?

Congratulations. I got my Blue ID in March of 2001. We use Martin's Point. It does seem to be Tricare with a different name. 19 years into it here. I have not seen any 'need' for employment. With this pandemic going on, and so many being forced out-of-work, so many businesses forced to go...

    Testosterone treatment?

That is my understanding. Once you have cancer, it is well established that testosterone will make the cancer much worse.

    Testosterone treatment?

I have Prostate cancer. My cancer has been very aggressive and fast-spreading. My initial procedure was to surgically remove the prostate and its connective nerves. Then a few years later the cancer came back. Prostate cancer goes into a growth stage in the presence of testosterone. So we had...

    Coupling up again in retirement

One of my neighbors, Peter, carpooled with me one time 3 hours away to an art exhibit that we were both invited to attend. While there Peter met a lady whom he had dated in the 1970s. After they got re-acquainted, she began visiting his house with her car loaded with baking supplies. As Peter...

Poll: Who pays for their news?

I feel there was a time when the 'news' reported things that had happened and it was up to us to decide how we felt about those things. Now they report on their opinions and it is up to us to decide if we think it truly happened. Since I retired, I have been interviewed on-camera by local TV...

    Thoughts about Retirement Communities?

My father lived in one when I was a teen, and when he was in his 70s. They just never appealed to me. When I was forced to retire at 42, it never occurred to me to settle in one of those.

    your favorite pharmacy in retirement?

My health care plan [Martins Point] has its own mail-order pharmacy. I have one prescription that comes from a different mail-order pharmacy because it is an injection that must be custom mixed and packed in dry ice.

How are you (yes you) taking advantage of HSA?

I do not have a HSA plan. I do not foresee ever having a HSA plan. The US Navy provides my health care coverage.

Withdrawal Strategy - where do I start?

Live on the earnings from your portfolio. I would NEVER withdraw cash from an investment to live on.

    The money wasted on crap....

This thread reminds me of a quote: "For all my life I have spent half of my earnings on gambling, women and drink, the other half I completely wasted."

Life without Sequence of Returns Risk (SORR)

If I have a lot of income that was not tax-sheltered I would likely do that too. I have been fortunate in keeping most of my income tax-sheltered since 1983.

Spousal Pension NOT optional for some

X amount would be deducted from my monthly pay. My wife chose not to participate. She has already had five heart attacks. She has out-lived all of her relatives and ancestors. She has assumed that she will die before I die.

At what point did you think the $1 million milestone was possible?

In the last few months right before I retired, I was doing a lot of math. Trying to calculate the value of my pension. When added to my portfolio, I was surprised to see that my Net Worth [if you consider Face Value of my pension] was over $1Million.

Spousal Pension NOT optional for some

As a Military retiree, my wife had the option to select Survivor Benefit Plan [SBP] the day that I retired. She was counseled separately, that she had many options. If we paid one amount, then when I die she could get 10% of my pension, for another amount she could get 20% of my pension, and so...

    Coupling up again in retirement

My parents divorced when I was a teen. My father in his 60s found that he was swamped by single older ladies. He used to tell me stories about it. He lived in a fifth-wheel travel trailer and he 'snow birded' throughout the South every winter. In each town where he stopped, he would go into a...

Life without Sequence of Returns Risk (SORR)

You need somewhere to park your money. My investment pays me cash every month, but I am not drawing down the investment. The original investment stays the same, as it pays me each month.

Life without Sequence of Returns Risk (SORR)

I think that a 'Sequence of Returns risk' only happens If you are taking withdrawals from your portfolio. If you refuse to draw down your portfolio, then such a risk vanishes.

    Military retirees?

Sweet my current pension of $1580/month times 0.013 is a pay raise of $20.54, so I will be paid $1600.54/month. Now I can afford to buy my own skate key.

Cost of Retiree Health Insurance from former employer?

Ooops, I retired from the US Navy. I receive a monthly pension and I am 'on the hook' to any possible recalls in the future [there was such a recall this past summer of all military retirees who had worked as HM Corpsmen or Medics].
