Do You Hide Your Financial Success From Others?

I live very comfortably and spend money more freely than I did when I worked. I can do this because I saved about half my income and lived frugally when I was working. This concept seems mysterious to some.

How many hours of TV do you watch per day?

Lol! I’m retired and staying home because of the pandemic. I watch a LOT of tv! But it’s mostly movies or acclaimed series. Amazon & Netflix are my friends.:dance::dance::dance:

Will you hold - if there's a new Covid Crash?

One thing I didn’t see mentioned is the tax cost of selling in a taxable account. I thought about selling at various points. However, about half of my assets is in a taxable account. If I sell, in many cases I have a very sizable capital gain which would raise my taxable income significantly...

Will you hold - if there's a new Covid Crash?

I’m almost entirely in individual stocks. Most pay dividends. I only sell if I’m uneasy about what’s happening in a company - take my profit & sell. If I have enough cash, I buy when the market drops. Best of luck!

At what point did you stop doing Roth conversions?

This has been an interesting discussion. I don’t think there is really any way to calculate your future expenses accurately. I retired at 62, 11 years ago. It was before the ACA existed so that did not factor into my scenarios. When I was working, I converted IRA $ to Roth IRAs to the extent I...

I have COVID-19 and No, It's Not the Flu

I just read through all the posts. I don’t intend to hijack this thread but I’ve had 4 years with chronic fatigue syndrome and see some parallels. Plus, in early March I was ill for 3 weeks with a fever. I’ve never been just “sick” that long. It was before there was talk of Covid with mild...

More Expensive Home Purchase After FIRE

I moved a few years after retirement. I had a paid for house and bought a new house that was 24% or so of my net worth. I can afford it, and the mortgage interest is deductible. I’m very content with my decision. Property tax is horrendous here...

Coronavirus - Health and preparedness aspects - II

I live in RI and we already have 4 confirmed cases because of a school trip to Italy. This is near where I live (it’s a small state...) I’m taking it all seriously without panicking. I’m 71 and retired, prime candidate for respiratory issues. Anyhow, I’ve already topped off OTC meds and...

Cancel internet and sign up again as new customer?

I used to routinely call up and see what the new customer rate was, and then get it. I live in a city with 2+ options. The last time Cox didn’t seem to care. But I was cutting cable tv, anyhow. Now I have Verizon Fios for about $80/month. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime and then subscribe to...

    Firing the service workers

I am physically unable to do much, so I want to spend my energy on things I enjoy. I have a house cleaner who charges $20 an hour and a somehow much more expensive lawn service. I simply can’t spend energy on those activities. I have chronic fatigue syndrome and a bad back. C’est la vie!

Did the flu shot in 2019 make you sick?

I had the over-65/more potent shot a couple of weeks ago, no problems.

Age 68 and No Gray Hair

I’m 71 with very little grey in my dark brown hair. There’s a bit around the sides of my face and I think an occasional one elsewhere. I’ve been this way for years. My parents were only partly grey at 85 and 95 when they died, and my younger brother has less grey than I do, at 64. It’s genetic.

    Adventures in Ketosis (long)

Interesting to find a cardiologist who likes Keto. He sells the keyto breathalyzer. I couldn’t find it on amazon but didn’t search elsewhere. I lost almost 5 pounds in 10 days or so. !!!!

I had to do the same but was able to return the cash to my IRA in under 60 days.

Poll:Using credit cards for monthly spending

I was just thinking about having bills paid automatically. I don’t believe they get my password. They get my checking routing and account number. But that is printed on checks so it’s not a huge secret. Any time I write a check, the payee has that info. So I feel reasonably secure. I use Ally -...

Poll:Using credit cards for monthly spending

I have almost all my recurring bills paid from my checking account. I lose a little by not charging, but it’s simpler for me. I have multiple credit cards and charge the rest of my purchases. My bills are all on autopay from my checking account, and I pay off the credit cards in full every month.

    self-search on internet

I have a common name (I found). I used to be able to google myself and eventually find me. No more, and I know how to look. But if I use a people search engine, it does find me. I am now married to my brother. Who knew? And once a credit card gave me a middle name (just the initial) so I come up...

    Low carb and lipids

The old wisdom was that cholesterol you ate raised your blood cholesterol. This has mostly been disproven in various studies but the info is suspicious because it goes against the old theories. When I ate very low carb/Keto, my blood profile improved amazingly. A lot of people have had the same...

    Revocable or Irrevocable trust?

Ah, thanks. That explains it better. My impression is that the nursing homes you’d qualify for are usually not good ones, though. I still would go, in this case, with the revocable trust and the FA.

    Revocable or Irrevocable trust?

I’m not certain, it may be a state issue. But... you can’t get government assistance for a nursing home unless you have almost no assets. Secondly, there are issues of going through probate upon her death, on anything outside the trust, unless it is in joint ownership. I have a revocable living...

Poll:Using credit cards for monthly spending

I have my utilities, mortgage and credit card bills paid out of my checking account at Ally. It simplifies my life. My SS and other income go into that account. But I use credit cards for all my purchases, for convenience. I pay everything off when due. If I can pay with PayPal, I do, and it is...

Is anyone 50+ and still in full aggressive growth mode with IRA?

I’m 71 and probably 80% in dividend paying stocks, mostly individual stocks. I have a couple of REITs, some bond funds, some misc. My goal is for everything to pay significant interest or dividends. I have some stocks with huge unrealized LTCG that pay small dividends. I’m doing okay and I don’t...
