    Am I over insured?

Thank you so much for the reply! I really mischaracterized the cash- that was poor wording on my part. It is mostly all invested in VTSAX or TSP C and S funds. In my mind I was differentiating against money in real estate, but it came out wrong. We are both in the Air Force. My husband has 3...

    Am I over insured?

My spouse and I each make about $100,000 base salary, plus military housing allowance that varies on location but will end when we retire in 5 years. At that point we will each get a 50% pension. We also have some rental properties that have around $2.5M in mortgages and $1.5M equity. Finally we...

    For Those Using USAA Banking

I blindly invested and banked with them for years. About 6 months ago I moved nearly everything to Vanguard.

    Strategic Sourcing - - - K-cups

I always hate responding with an “answer” that isn’t responsive to the question but here I go anyway. :-) Check out a refurbished super automatic coffee machine like Jura or DeLonghi. They run around ~$500 but make European style coffee with crema. Basically it’s like my old Keurig but no waste...

Should I take a lower paying job?

As a government lawyer, I think someone hard charging like you would be unhappy. The politics don’t go away, just add in the bureaucracy and frustration of the government. I’m sticking it out but just because I am within 5 years of my pension and lifelong healthcare. I don’t know what are...

    Low Carb Diet

Yes, I might consider trying it again in 10 years or so. (Not being facetious haha, just want to be retired and have my kids older!) I’m a healthy weight, just had wanted the additional health benefits and drop the last 10lbs from my 4th baby. I had to hit the gym instead, which isn’t nearly as...

    Low Carb Diet

Eggs I remember. Lots of eggs. Tritip. I think some cheese. I googled and was following the plans to have less than 20 carbs per day but still plenty of calories. Coffee with butter. Lo Salt (I think it was called that?) I honestly don’t know what went wrong or why my body reacts like that.

    Low Carb Diet

I am curious how people do this. I tried it last fall. Within 24 hours my throat hurt so bad I could barely eat. 4 days in I was vomiting and my bones ached. By Day 6 I was in the ER, admitted to to the hospital for two nights. I was a healthy 40 year old. The docs had no idea, they chalked it...

Help me buy this Lexus RX

I’ve posted this article from Consumer Reports before and I think it has good advice on negotiating. https://www.consumerreports.org/consumerist/dealerships-rip-you-off-with-the-four-square-heres-how-to-beat-it/

The ‘spendy’ time of the year

I love pragmatic gifts. They are the best. I also pay for conveniences like grocery delivery, live in au pair, and house cleaners. We also spend $ on hotels. We have a family of 6 and stay in AirBnBs pretty much exclusively. Average price is probably $180-300/night, but always memorable...

    $1B Lottery

Haha! I actually bought $20 worth of tickets today- $10 for me and $10 for my spouse. We’ve already gotten $20 worth of fun from the dreaming and talking about “what if’s” :-)

    Screaming Kids in Restaurants...

Maybe it’s because I’m in the thick of parenting at this stage of my life but thjs makes me feel bad for the parents. I can’t imagine how I’d feel if I heard someone saying I had awful kids. :-(

    Airbnb "over there"

I concur with the poster that said in Europe booming.com operates the same as AirBnB. We recently moved back to the US after living in Germany for 3 years and booming.com typically had more/better properties for some reason.
