Anyone have an Ice Machine (free-standing)?

We had a Zline outside in our BBQ patio and loved it's convenience in summer and just shut it down in winter. We are building a new house and I am adding one to our walk in pantry. We don't care about the noise factor because it will be tucked away in the pantry which has a swinging door...

what would you do? Fly vs Drive

Fly, 100% It's way more safe than anyone thinks. Right now the airlines level of attention to cleanliness and precautions taken are extraordinary. The airport workers and TSA security cleans and sanitizes everything constantly and bags get sprayed etc. So pick your poison. It cleaner now than...

Anyone else with delayed tax refunds?

Electronically filed my parents taxes on April 6th and they had their refund deposited on April 13th. Same with our son. Less than a week between electronic filing and his deposit. This is prob the fastest I have ever seen refunds for either of them. Strange times...???

May not go out to eat —— ever

Can't imagine NOT being able to go eat out again. We love to cook and we do enjoy entertaining/grilling at home with friends. But we also are big on international travel and trying all the different foods that this world has to offer, is part of that enjoyment. So nope, we don't plan to give it...

    Wireless Speaker

+2 We bought a couple of the Bose Revolve + and they are able to be linked up to one another. Comes in handy to when you want to move around the yard during a party or wherever you are. We like that is has a small handle so we can hang it up on a hook if we wanted to. Can't go wrong with Bose...

    Social distancing for couples

The best form of social distancing for couples is to remain 9K miles apart...I am in quarantine with my elderly parents in California since the beginning of March, DH is back home in Dubai... As it stands right now, I can't get back home anyway since the UAE isn't allowing anyone back in...

    Neighborhood protests

I have never had a flu shot. I am 50 and have had the flu 3 times in all these years of my adult life bad enough that I can remember. Also I have never had chicken pox, even when my mom threw me in the room with my sister and 4 other cousins who were in full outbreak, just so I could get it and...

How much do you invest when the market is down?

Same...we are planning to retire end of next year. Our paper losses are upper 6 figures :( but we still have all our shares. So while it's a bit of a shocking figure to see, it's not permanent and it will go back up. We are just grateful this is happening now and not in the year after we retire...

    Make It Stop!!!!!

It sucks for a lot of people. You're entitled to feel sucky...Many, Many people feel that way and its normal! My heart has been beating a little faster these past 2 weeks because we are retiring next year and have seen our NW drop by mid six figures over these 2 weeks! But that said, not...

Mid 50's or younger... are you counting on Social Security?

IDK, but we have spent far less years stressing over whether or not SS will be there by NOT planning on it as part of retirement. We trust ourselves more than we trust the gov't to keep their promises. I'd rather bank on what we can control, then put our future security in something out of our...

Mid 50's or younger... are you counting on Social Security?

My parents always reminded me and my sister "don't put all your eggs in one basket" and "don't count your chickens before they hatch!" They always said make sure your retirement plan isn't banked on SS being your main or only source of retirement income. They knew the gov't couldn't...

    Family abuse of seniors

I am so sorry. I have been there and it kills me. My mom called me so many horrible names, told me I am not welcome in her house. It was awful. All I can do is bite my tongue and take a deep breath. Often I find myself going back to remember all the good times we had, knowing that this mean...

    Family abuse of seniors

I have a book recommendation if you have an aging parent who is in need of elder care or suffers with Dementia like my mother does. It was a HUGE help for me. Got it on Amazon its title: "Mom and Dad We Need to Talk" by Cameron Huddleston As for those with Dementia, it isn't just the person...

What did you do today? - 2020 version

It's really not as scary or as strict as everyone thinks (hence our too many brunch Mai Tais!) To be honest, I feel way safer here than in many part of the US - sad but true. They just have pretty big egos that match their really big buildings...But not everyone here is as well-off as...

What did you do today? - 2020 version

 We are about 8k miles away from Florida...It's way more expensive here, but just as humid with less bugs and a lot more sand! However the fishing sucks, so Florida for the win on fishing! ;D

    Where to relocate ???

We haven't decided 100% on exactly where we will live when we retire in a couple years, but about 90% sure it will be around Apex/Cary, NC area. Husband is from southern Virginia/NC area and all his family is still there. I was born and raised in central coast of CA. I moved to San Diego in 1990...

What did you do today? - 2020 version

Took a boat out early Friday morning and tooled around the Marina and Palm Islands for a few hours. Then went to brunch at Trader Vics where we drank way too many Mai-Tais and stuffed our faces with boatloads of fresh sashimi and sushi rolls. Life could be worse! ;D Have a good weekend everyone.

Poll: Your Internet Speed (Mbps down)?

Just ran Ookla speed test. It's bundled w/cable and a phone line (that we don't use). Runs us around $140 a month. Not as cheap as the states, but not awful because allows us to use a Slingbox to watch US TV by piggybacking off our families cable service. ;)

Pretty Sure We’re Never Retiring...Need Advice

I am not going to sugar coat this because I am not THAT person. Take what you want and leave the rest! Here goes, because you asked. Speaking from my own experience. My DH and I met 20 years ago. Both were coming off 2 divorces that financially wiped us both out to zero. We had about $40k in...

    Sad Day for Boy Scouts.

I didn't participate in the scouts when I was younger because my sister and I were involved in Awanas at our small town church. Perverts and bad seeds plant themselves in all type of organization and no one is immune from this behavior. Look at what the Catholic church has been dealing with...

Mid 50's or younger... are you counting on Social Security?

Yep. If you take the Social Security wage base starting in 1980 and run it out 40 years thru 2019, if a worker maxed out their social security contributions each year, they would have contributed $189k over that time. And the employer was matching that total, so you'd end up with around $377k...

    My Own Retirement Calculator

Question: when considering inflation in your projections, do you take into account that not everything inflates at the same rate? Some expenses are growing faster the historical 3.25% average rate ROI (rate of inflation) and way more than the Feds target rate of 2%. One could argue that in...

Mid 50's or younger... are you counting on Social Security?

100s of thousands is a lot to personally contribute to SS! Figure you must have been self employed for the vast majority of your working years to contribute that much, especially retiring at 51, 7 years ago! ;) We have contributed the annual max into SS for the past 18 years, since my DH...
