    RIP Big Money Jim

Missing Jim I also learned of Jim's death and decided to stop by to emphasize how kind and generous he was, always willing to be helpful with the oddball computer issue. I met him a few years ago and enjoyed our visit immensely as we gossiped about all the board characters. I will miss him...

    Sobering interview with top epidemiologist

A big range because there are so many variables. Herd immunity can happen in nursing homes because even though the nursing home rate death rate is high, most still recover. Case fatality rate may be around 15% but numbers are still uncertain. I've seen figures as low as 8%. Averaged...

    Sobering interview with top epidemiologist

Interesting the amateur epidemiologists second guessing the numbers.

How much you'll really spend in retirement

From the personality test I just took I apparently am not conscientious. Thus, I don't know how much money I spend in retirement. I do know it is more than before I retired.

Personality Type (modern, not Myers Briggs)

I am neurotic, introverted, not especially conscientious, but have big ideas. I sound like a jerk. Or maybe I was in a bad mood.

    What We Believe

You can't plan for everything. For example, planning for the repeal of the ACA is tough. I retired some years ago, before the ACA and the ACA reduced our costs even without a tax credit. Before the ACA I was on an expensive risk pool. With the passage of the ACA the risk pools disappeared...

    Taking a Train (Amtrak)?

Even when I go alone I get the full room, big comfort difference. And if you are flexible on dates you can find pretty good deals.

The Bull Run will continue for years .. Cabot article

And, there never was a consensus on global cooling. In fact, in the mid-70s the basic consensus was that they did not yet have a good understanding of what determines the course of the "climate machine" to make climate predictions.

Poll:How many daily medications do you take?

Given where I fall on the curve, I should have taken social security at 62.

    Taking a Train (Amtrak)?

I love Amtrak provided I go first class. I have done just about every long distance Amtrak train in the US. "Rock me momma like the wind and the rain Rock me momma like a south bound train Hey, hey, hey momma rock me."

    Generosity question

I see some are fine with giving gifts but don't want to be asked for money. As a different take on this, I have family members with very, very little. They work hard, but make very little money. As a result one did not fill prescriptions or go to the dentist. She had a heart attack. There...

Proper term for Social Security Income

I think this sentence is confusing. What do you mean taxed at the same time? Do you mean that a person had this income all in the same tax year? When you say "conditional" are you referring both to the social security benefits and to Long Term Capital Gains? You might simply be crowding...

Retirement Budgeting... how did it go for you?

Thanks for the welcome back folks. I see many familiar "faces." Jazz, it is great to see you made it to ER. Audrey, I'd love an update on birding along the Rio Grande.

Retirement Budgeting... how did it go for you?

We spend much more as retirees. And, it is on things I did not expect. Like musical instruments, bicycles and a second home. Provided our net worth doesn't drop signficantly I don't worry about it.

Which ACA metal level did you choose?

Bronze. No tax credit so it makes sense. In some places the cost of Silver plans are disproportionately high due to cuts in cost sharing subsidies by the government and decisions by some states to put the burden on the silver plans. In a few states gold is even cheaper than silver, if you...

Will I be able to bike the Tour de Tucson this again this fall? Will my flute/guitar/drum band play perform again in the spring? Is it time to check in at the early retirement forums now that I am old enough to collect social security?

    Yet another health insurance shopper

I called the Minnesota BCBS and they talked about all the Minnesota plans with me and said that all of them(there are three choices in Minnesota) would cover me out of state on their PPO network.

Michael, I emailed Florida BCBS and this is what they said in response to my inquiry about coverage when out of state: Good Afternoon and thank you for contacting Florida Blue, your Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plan - We are here for you! The short answer to your question is yes, we do! Our PPO...

    Yet another health insurance shopper

The agent and MNsure was wrong. I talked to BCBS and they said despite what the MNsure site says when we are out of state we are covered under the Blue whatever it is called "network." Traveling is not a problem. The cost of use for the silver plan is about what we pay on the risk pool but...

    Yet another health insurance shopper

Did look at this. It appears that the BCBS plan in Minnesota, which is not a multi state plan treats out of state providers as out of network, except for a few providers close to the border in Wisconsin, the Dakotas, and Iowa. I am having an agent double check for me. There is a BCBS plan...
