    What's your daily routine/grind?

Interesting how all the internal clocks keep on ticking. I could not stop chuckling to myself as I read the pretty standard schedules left over from the workforce. We found it far to easy to "drift" into night people life, we have become vampires, or whatever one might choose to call it, but...

    What do you drive?

2015 Mazda Miata MX-5 GT PRHT 2015 SCION XB 686 Parklan also both purchased on the same day and for backup, or hauling big stuff, we couldn't part with our 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Quad Cab. (65k mi)

    Sports car?

No, however 10 years into retirement, when we both hit 60, we needed to replace an aging auction Lincoln Mark VIII that was beginning to fail. Donated it. Found our perfect car was the last Scion XB to haul my Music gear, and our Irish Wolfhounds, plus the last Miata MX-5 with a retractable...

Retiring early w/ pension to save my sanity!

Broadway - I can't fix your property tax, we are well under $2k/yr in Central CA. As to Health Insurance, well as long as the ACA survives its been just about tailor made for low income retirees. Kaiser Silver plan. Good Coverage. Recent built every service operation center in my little...

Retiring early w/ pension to save my sanity!

Drumgal, I feel a connection, a very positive one. I needed to "get out" of a County job back in 2006. I had 23 years in, but alas I was only 50. I looked at the numbers as "getting" 35% of full pension, while the naysayers on this thread would say I took a 65% hit. Still my calc was based...

    new corvette

Why the hang up on paying cash? I admit we are in catch up mode. After a more than decade hiatus in buying any cars period, we finally "caught up" with the OP so to speak. We found a lightly used 2015 MX-5 PRHT this last Jan 2016. Fun Fun Fun! We thought it prudent to use other people's...

Has anyone taken a "hobby job"?

I play guitar and sing in a hobby band. We play classic rock. Beatles, Stones, Neil Young, Tom Petty, etc. The pay is laughable. I would estimate in a typical year I " make" hundreds" and spend "thousands". So far so good. ;)

Animals we share our lives with

Our Irish Wolfhound Pack Wynter is 9 months, Dash is just over one year. Isabeau, the blonde beauty is pushing 12 years old, very, very old for this breed.

    Are you retired?

Yes 50 50 At 43, DW and I ran the numbers, figured we could start a 7-year plan... Retired in 2006, that's a decade now, Wowzers!

What is the benefit of an 800+ credit score?

Similar but different. We have fixed income streams, but don't tend to save large amounts of cash for large purchases. We found good credit allowed us to buy two cars from two dealers on a day back in Jan of this year. Zero down, so completely using other peoples money. No trade in as we...

    Lifestyle creep delays early retirement

I wouldn't think a Mortgage is significant to ER as long as the last one occurs one "Interval" before ER. For most isn't that about 15 years. So for example if 50 is your ER target age, you just have to be aware enough at age 35 to buy the last house then and there. Simple, ok not so much...

Do you remember your "countdown" to retirement?

It was a 7 year plan. At 3 years out I really started obsessing over it, running the numbers in my spreadsheet almost daily, sharing my plans with my coworkers who were supportive but dubious... At about a year out I made the final adjustments and pushed the date back a few months to gain a...

    Regrets of Retiring Too Late

DW and I had the conversation with both of us age 43. Calculated we could retire at absolute soonest when she turned 50. Some have written of the "penalty" for opting out of a pension system before a certain age and "paying" x% forever after. We looked at getting out the first year possible...

How often do you trade cars or trucks?

2004 Ram Truck 60k miles now. Purchased new. Expect to drive another decade. 1995 Mark VIII 140K miles. Auction car cost $3K in 2005 with 119k miles. Getting long in the tooth, considering a replacement of some kind. I would like something that will haul Irish Wolfhounds this time (more than...

    Estimating Expenses

I think you are in great place. You are living pretty frugal. You have a great plan. We basically did what you are planning. We were both 50 when I retired in 2006. DW was already there. We live in central CA. Our budget matches your expenses if you add 15k more for a really excellent...

How Many Month/Years of Living Expenses do You Keep in Cash?

None, "they" pay us. We spend it. If you want to get technical then call it max of: One Month, lol.

    When does ER get hard?

It was never hard It just is not hard. We are 7 years in. There are still times when we look at each other and the knowing grin appears on our faces. OK sometimes we do the ER happy dance, but only in public, and only if we think folk might be watching... ER is simply a wonderful thing. It...

    Best guitar solos

We sat around with our guitars trying to figure out how to play it. My little group of friends started in 1964. Making music is a lifelong pursuit. In ER I have all the time I need, and nearly enough gear...
