Taxes - any disadvantges to E-file?

I've e-filed for the last 7 years and would not want to do it any other way. I e-filed on March 1 and had both fed and state accepted the next day. Being a Vanguard client, I get to use Turbo Tax, It's Deductible, and e-file fed and state taxes all for free. It's Deductible is a great tool to...

    Another Asset Allocation OUTING

I can understand wanting to be a little value tilted. I have run several models with large and s/c values. Over the last 10 years value has helped take the volatility out of the bad years and has beaten the TSM and S/C and ext'd market indexes on the total average. I think age is a heavy factor...

    Bonds/Cash ???

If you go to the VG sites and look at their funds by asset class, you will see Treasurey notes; tips, etc have not done that well so far this year. The MM at least pay 4.32% currently and rise a few tenths each month. Also, this is my 401 rollover account. I have enough in my brokerage account...

    Bonds/Cash ???

I retired at the first of the year. I have my bond/cash allocated to V/G: Total Bond Mkt - 13% High Yield Corp - 6% 6 month CD's - 11% Prime MM - 14% The MM seems to be paying the most right now,if you consider gains + yields, but I notice they charge 0.3% E/R. Anyone have any better ideas?

    Inverted yield curve

I don't know all the details, but it is because the short term bond is paying a higher interest rate than longer term bonds are.

    Asset Allocation

Actually FAIRX started up in Dec '99. They don't really replace the MCV index. Their portfolio shows 57% LC; 31% MC; and 12 SC. This includes 18% foreign. I know they are classed as MCB. I was mistaken tho, they did lose 1.6% in 2002.

    Asset Allocation

O.K. you experts out there. I have just retired & moved all my assets (about $1.1 mil) to VG. I just received their recommendation and they don't cut it in my 1997 to date model. They wanted to put more about 34% in LC (including US growth (ugh)) including 40% into the various bond accounts...

    VG Options

Thanks for the input. I guess no one has any experience with their recommended plans. They charge $1500 if I don't decide to use them.

    VG Options

I finally retire at age 63 on Dec 31.   ;D ;D ;D This is scary stuff. I have recently moved my accounts from Fidelity to UBS (my regrets). I am now looking at VG.  I am thinking about having them do an analysis/recomendation for me vs. just WWELX or VWINX, plus some other funds. 1. Do any of...

Buying Years of Service as Asset Protection

When my wife retired from the Texas school system 6 years ago we purchased 5 years from another state's teaching. It only cost us $15K total and was well worth it in pension increase. I specifically asked if the $15K was tax deductible and was told it was not.

    Fidelity Stategic Income (FSICX)

Thanks for the input. A whole lot of good funds have come in exisitance in the last 10 years. I don't know if data from 20 years ago is applicable to the market in the last 7 or 8 years. Plus we have had a bear market in '99 and '01 to compare performance. However, I may decrease my estimate...

    Fidelity Stategic Income (FSICX)

I am thinking of adding this as a part of my portfolio (30 to 35%) when I retire the end of this year (I hope). It has a 5.1% yield and the 3 and 5 year returns has been 12.4 an 9.5 with a 0.76 E/R. It has not lost in any year since start up in May '98. What do you think?

    SS benefits and spending

You must have worked 40 quarters outside teaching to be able to get SS. My wife is a retired teacher and she cannot draw it because she only worked for the Texas state gov't.

10 mistakes people make when doing a living trust.

Re: 10 mistakes people make when doing a living tr I am planning to do a Living Trust in the next few months and have been investigating them. I had an Estate Planner give us a presentation. I also have an upcoming planning session as part of the Crown Ministries study we are doing. A Estate...

    Advice prior to retirement

Thanks TH. Yes I know that historical data doesn't mean a guanantee for the future. That is why I will drop AVALX sometime soon and the foreign market is good right now too. I still like the PRWCX better than the 500 idx tho.

    Advice prior to retirement

:)Thanks for the reassuance. I see why so many put off retiring. It is scary. The reason I have waited is to rebuild what I lost in the market in 2002. Also wanted to get within 18 mos of medicare so my COBRA would cover me at a reduced rate of health insurance. To continue my present medical...

    Advice prior to retirement

I am within 9 to 15 months from RE at 63. We will have $33k from wife's pension, $15K from SS and a little over $1mil in funds from brokerage and 401k. I believe the funds I will select at retirement are: 1. Wellington - 35% 2. Weslesley - 35% 3. TR Price Cap Apprec (PRWCX) - 20% (never lost...

    Bond Allocation

I plan to RE in the next year at age 62. With my wife's retirement, plus my SS giving us 50% of what we need, I am thinking I don't need the standard 40 to 50% of my investments in bonds. I still would allocate the other assets. I still have a house payment, but it is low. Inputs? ???
