    Where to Start

I have this same problem. Whenever I get advice from anyone it is always, max out the 401k first, etc. I am currently working on planning for the "gap", because who knows what tax laws will be in place 15-20 years from now and the SEPP 72t may not exist. I am still maxing my 401k, because the...

    Anyone using Institutional Money Managers

Personally, I find it hard to believe an actively managed portfolio has consistently beaten its benchmark, accounting for fees and taxes over 10+ years and that it will continue to do so in the future.  Especially "across all performance periods." But thats just me.

    City or country???????

City all the way. Being able to walk down the street to the movies, bookstore, slice of pizza... The boonies (what us city slickers call the country) would drive me batty. ;D

    Achieving balance

Basically, what i've done is set up savings/investing through automatic withdrawal from my paycheck/account. All my investments for the year are DCA'ed biweekly, automagically. I've set the amounts to provide a high probability of success via FireCalc and other online engines. This will...

Trailer Home with Land or Small House...You Decide

Re: Trailer Home with Land or Small House...You De I think it really comes down to personal preference. I dont know what value land has in Arizona, but 4 acres where I live would run you into the high 6 figures if not more. Depending on the land values, it might be worth it to get the...

Advice needed from early Federal retirees

I have the same TSP allocation as yakers. 40% C, 20% S, 20% I, 20% G. All the advice i've gotten says to use the G-fund as your main bond allocation. I will dump some cash into vanguards TSM fund next month. I also have 2 old roth's that I am thinking of using for some reit exposure and some...

    Early Retirement and 401k

Thanks for the quick replies! Can't get the FERS annuity until age 57. There would be a 25% reduction, which is ok with me and will help supplement for 2.5 yrs until I can tap the TSP. Cannot keep Federal health benefits either. Thats the worst of it, but I can't see working another 6+ years...

    Early Retirement and 401k

Hey all, I had another (yes another!) question I hope you can help me with. First let me say I am a buy and holder and big believer in asset allocation and am steadily becoming a Boglehead, and a Diehards groupie. I work for the federal government and put the maximum allowed 14k per year (+...

Interpreting the FERS rules is not easy but this is what I found: You may continue your heath insurance coverage only if you meet the following conditions: Your annuity must begin within 30 days or, if you are retiring under the Minimum Retirement Age (MRA) plus 10 provision of the Federal...

Hi Helen, thanks for the info. I am still trying to figure out the federal system, I am under FERS. I was just beginning to wonder about the medical coverage. My MRA is 57. At that point I would have 25 years. I am trying to figure out the deferred pension/medical aspects. I have run...

Might I recommend William Bernsteins The Four Pillars of Investing? An absolute must before you start investing and hiring chimpanz...er money managers.

I couldn't agree more. The pension isn't really a factor. I've decided to put the extra 500$ or so into a total stock market fund with automatic transfers set up so I wont even know it. I am also going to try to squeeze out some more money and pay off the mortgage early, which shouldn't impact...

    Delurk and advice opinions wanted

Funny you should mention that, I was just looking at the Vanguard funds.  I am more comfortable with  balanced funds as well, and was leaning towards the Wellesley Income fund. My 401k is 80% stocks now.  I wouldn't mind the lower stock % in the wellesley.  Also at 10%+ returns over the life of...
