    New Car Dealer REQUIRES Financing

Most of the car buying you Tubers out there say to never admit you are paying cash until you have nailed down a price. Even then they may have incentives that can only be used with financing. The last vehicle I purchased new I took all the financing incentives and then paid it off the...

Share Your FIRE Milestones - 2021

That’s fantastic. My parents are in their mid-seventies and unfortunately I think they are done with international travel due to health issues. Amazing you were able to get so much travel in. This is why I want to retire before 60.

    Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

Prices on EVs are getting pretty compelling. I can lease a base Model Y for half the price of Camry. I already have a charger at home for PHEV and can charge for free at work. Tesla super charging station are ubiquitous in CA so I think I would be fine with the shorter 260 miles of range on...

Considering a retirement move out of town/state

I’m not retired yet but this is something I think about a lot. I like where I live but it’s getting a bit stale and the taxes suck. I still have 3 teens but the youngest will be off to college in about 3 more years. After that we are free to leave but DW want to keep our current house for the...

    Top Ten Expenses?

Yes, taxes will likely always be my biggest expense even when we up our travel budget even more. We also don't eat out much except when traveling. We did a very nice kitchen remodel in 2019 and I love to cook. One of the great things about living in California is fresh, year-round produce...

    NY & SF commutable areas?

Really depends on what you are looking for in terms of lifestyle. if you want walkable areas with great restaurants and you're ok with condo living, look around Laurel Ave in San Carlos or Burlingame Ave in Burlingame. These areas are also close to Cal Train stations which would take you into...

How to figure out when Roth conversions are worth it?

Since your both still working check to see if your 401k plans offer a mega back door roth option. I found out that our plan does. You can contribute quite a bit to a roth this way on top of maxing out your 401k contributions. Conversions likely won't be beneficial for you.

Suze Orman - You need 20M to retire early

Dave seems to believe the market consistently delivers returns of 11-12% without volatility and 8% is a safe withdrawal rate. If this is what he's seeing in his statements I would not be surprised to learn he turned over his wealth to a ponzi scheme.

Suze Orman - You need 20M to retire early

I don't think she gives investment advice, more about getting your financial house in order. I read one of her books over 20 years ago, after I had read the Millionaire Next Door. The one piece of her advice that I took was to buy term life insurance policies instead of whole life and invest...

Can I retire in 5 years?

I totally get it. Back in 2008-2009 I was worried every day I was going to get laid off, coupled with the fact that my wife stopped working around that time after the birth of our third kid, I was extremely stressed. Around 2014 it got even worse as I had issues with a co-worker that was...

Can I retire in 5 years?

Is your wife on board with that plan? My wife said her family didn’t sacrifice to leave Asia (Philippines) to move back there. She’s shot down my suggestion to sell everything and travel the world. She wants the kids to always have a home base so selling our house in a HCOL are appears to be...

Asking for a friend...can he retire before 50?

Well, according to Suze Ormond he would need at least $20M. lol! $2M in retirement accounts is pretty impressive at their age and income levels. Well done. Too risky to me to call it quits today but in four more years they'll have saved quite a bit more and they'll know where the kids will be...

Suze Orman - You need 20M to retire early

In our 21 years of marriage we have had 4 cars. 3 we are still driving. The fourth was driven until is was no longer road worthy and traded in for $500 credit. The 19 year old car has just over 150k miles which my daughter is driving and was purchased before she was born. We don't drive too much.

    529 or taxable account?

Yes, the 529 does count as your asset for financial aid calculation. But so would a taxable account. Retirement accounts do not need to reported (at least on the FAFSA, private schools use their own rules). If the 529 is in your child's name as opposed to them being a beneficiary they it will...

    529 or taxable account?

I'm not quite following how you can plan your withdrawals from your taxable account to be tax free. In any event, I opened 529 accounts for each of my 3 kids when there were born and simply made contributions every paycheck for 15 years and I'm glad I did. Makes paying for college a breeze. I...

Suze Orman - You need 20M to retire early

A few years ago she gained a lot of attention by saying you need at least $5M to retire early. Now she need to up that amount to $20M to get more attention. Next year, she'll say you need at least $50M to retire early. It's all about the clicks.

Also hit my significant milestone today!

Also found out my work does a mega backdoor roth. I found out too late for 2023 but I'm all in for 2024. Though I suspect it will be on the chopping block by 2025 when new tax legislation is finally passed.

Poll: How Often Have You Had A Flat Tire?

My wife primarily drives our Chrysler Pacifica PHEV. It also does not have a spare. So many houses are getting remodeled in our area that she ends up driving over a nail at least twice a year. Usually too close to the sidewall that it can't be patched. It's maddening.

    5 years to go..max!

Hello from across the Bay (Peninsula). Looks like our timelines are aligned. As I was walking during this gorgeous sunny day, I had an epiphany on when I'll retire. I'll give my notice right after I receive my bonus in Nov 2027 and exit before my kids' spring break in March 2028. A few...

    Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

With used EV prices crashing to earth, I am now giving serious consideration to picking one up this year. My budget is $25k-$35k and I think I've narrowed my choices down to Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6 Wind and Audi e-Tron. I do not qualify for any tax subsidies. We generally only take about 3-4...

Can my state taxes really be 6x my federal?

Good to know. I have a EPO insurance through work that I have been happy with but we would probably move to a Kaiser HMO in early retirement.

Can my state taxes really be 6x my federal?

Cool. What would it be for 140k in deferred income and 80k in QDiv/LTCG?

Whatcha gonna do if ACA goes away?

I'd either need to keep working for a group plan, live overseas, or at least in a state that doesn't permit insurers to drop you when you get sick. Many pre-ACA policies were "insurance" in name only. Lots of fine print capping or excluding payouts.
