    House Flipping (with no taxes)!

Plan to keep the layout. These cabinets are old. Probably original cabinets from the late 70s. The upper cabinets seem to be in decent shape. Lower cabinets seem to have a lot more wear. The bottom below the sink looks like some water may have damaged 'em a bit over the yrs. I've thought...

    House Flipping (with no taxes)!

Hi Jo Ann. Thanks for sharing your experiences & advice. I actually recently stumbled across a fixer upper---FSBO found by going to an open house and there it stood across the street. Put an offer on it and bought my first house. Needs a lot of work from insulation to new floors throughout...

Aetna says my 10,000 dectible plan is grandfathered

Yes, what gauss wrote. However, I would caution on what's being said at this point + calling the insurance companies won't lead to much. You should know in a few months via a letter. Communication should be going out in Sep with your options. Sep should be pretty consistent across all carriers.

PPACA rates in California come in less than expected

I do wonder if the lower the than expected rate has more to do with CA being an active buyer in their state exchange rather than Obamacare itself. I think the plan rates vs one's expectations will vary a lot by state. MA & NY (also a GI market) residents, for ex, will probably be pleased...

    When to buy

I was mostly selling off or trimming individual positions up until this past week+. I finally initiated a new position -first one since Feb '11 - but this company's stock is already in bear market territory. Still adding to my 401k equity funds but I'm keeping some cash ready.

    Am I semi-FIRED?

Sounds like a short-term plan and that's fine. I'm not being harsh but do you really think about how you would feel doing this after say 5 years even? I'd come up with a long-term plan & start taking steps in that direction. For some office jobs, exposure could be the key. Get w/a temp firm...

Publicly traded REITs for residential real estate

I don't know if you will find a REIT investment that fits your criteria. A lot of REITs seem to be large scale operations where you won't find mgt buying a duplex/4-plex here and there (hence why small investors play the game). Only option I could think of is one of the non-REIT real estate...

Buffett: Bonds the Most Dangerous of Assets

Well, I agree. I wasn't trying to sell everyone here on the BRK idea going fwd. The one poster was trying to tell us he (?) would have rather been in Wellesley over BRK any period of time referring to historical returns. I just I'd chime in and post the returns Buffet has managed to produce...

Buffett: Bonds the Most Dangerous of Assets

First, I don't really think its an apples-apples comparison using a stock vs a stock/bond mutual fund but if you're fine with it so be it. BRK had some fantastic returns in the 70s/80s so excluding those decades is really selling it short. Performance has lagged a bit as the market has become...

Buffett: Bonds the Most Dangerous of Assets

A comparison using the last 10 yr period eh? Well, that settles it! Buffet is a lousy allocator of capital.

    Poll: Superbowl...Pats or Giants?

Pats are playing good ball and will be my pick. On a side note, the Super Bowl hasn't generated enough interest outside of the NE so everyone else will get the 'Dancing W/ The Stars' marathon.

    International bond funds

I think I recall seeing some Boglehead people claiming the intl' bond funds would be hedged so it would eliminate the currency diversification if that is the case - for better or worse. To answer your question - I just say it depends on how much slicing and dicing you want to do & how much...

Q: Worst part of your j*b?

For me, just watch the movie 'Office Space' :) It's funny b/c I used to think I could just escape whatever things annoy me about working at 'x' by job hopping and moving on. Now it just seems to be a rinse and repeat cycle after a year or so of starting a new job at a company.

Costco CEO name M* CEO of the year.

Sinegal has been the Sam Walton of his time. Devoid of upper mgt luxuries, nondescript HQ, low CEO salary, took good care of employees, understood how to create a good retail experience for customers, etc. I bet some West coast residents/investors made good money on Costco over the years by...

    VFWAX vs VTIAX ?

The Total Int'l Index has been reconfigured over the past few years. It used to exclude Canada and I recall it being strictly split between developed mkts index and emerging w/o regard to how much economic weight/GDP or whatever the country really contributed. For ex - at the time China was a...

    Plantar Fasciitis

I walk A LOT (thanks to my hyper border collie) and I've had PA flare up on and off over the years (especially when I had a job where I was on my feet most of the day).
