    concerned about launching ER

We hit our 1st # in 2010, 1MM, but waited for the next level up. I tried PT 2 times; 24 hours/week, but usually ended up working 70-80 hours, so put a stop to that this year at 50yo. Other reasons to pull the plug was travel and others having a claim on my time. Now I work 20-40 hours per...

What proportion do you save after tax?

We save all right now in 401K( 16% + companies 9%). We have Roths and Traditionals, although not adding right now. We save another 3% to kids(3) future collage. We save(divert) 3% to the future car/future roof/future furnace fund which will be fully funded next year.

    Anyone withdrawing more than 4%....?

The math might be right but after that 1 year the new end of the plan is 29 years, in theory. My point is the 'no other income' SWR for 30 to 40 years is around 4%. But not much discussion on 25, 20, 15 yrs SWR rates. Of course we need to be conservative with the terminal age for the calcs...

    Anyone withdrawing more than 4%....?

I intend to in hopefully a couple of years. 1) the 4% rule takes no other income sources into account, so + SS, + pension, + possible inheritence will increase the number. What will be there in the future you decide. 2) Bernicke's less spending IMO is real and I factor it into my numbers. 3)...

    Pension Question, Newbie on Forum

Thats not how mine works at small Xerox supplier Megacorp. I'm vested and if I leave tomorrow will get a check at 65. In my case, my vested benefit stops growing with inflation when I quit. job

How to politely let your elders know you won't support them?

Not to get off point, but I hope you also mentioned that that 25x number has no SS or pension built in and he adjusted that BIG number for his expected SS. job

    Another safe withdrawal rate question

Another thought, 4% is based on NO external extras. No SS, No Pension, No reverse mortgage, No reduced spending ala Bernicke, etc. For some those are valid, but not for everybody. job

    Another safe withdrawal rate question

I'm not sure I would call FIRECalc nor the Trinity study portfolio the optimal portfolio. One was S&P and cash. FireCalc 2.0 now has more asset classes, but not a comprehensive list, primarily because the data may not exist over the sim time line. Generalizing, I did a sim once that showed the...

Hydrogen Hoax and real Alternative Fuels for cars

Source or carrier .. I don't care. Oil, coal, peat are all sources, but i do not intend to convert my car to a steam engine when oil runs low. As always one main issue is one of scale. What does it take to supply the world with all alcohol. How much fresh water is needed to process, space to...

Hydrogen Hoax and real Alternative Fuels for cars

I install Hy fuel stations and can tell you co's are starting to convert (not autos) as there is beginning to be an economic benefit case as opposed to say batteries. Certainly slow right now but building steam, pun intended. To me a co. making the benefit case carries more weight than the DOE...

    What do you think?

If the non-ira/non 401k stuff is not in mutual funds (i.e. in individual stocks or etfs) why not go short what you would sell to rebalance against what you hold. Use the proceeds to do the rebalance and then close out over whatever timeframe you want to spread out your CG's. job

Poll: How much do you give?

$100/week to church = 9.x % of take home (after savings also), plus little nickle and dime stuff here and there. Catholic school does not count for the 5yr and 3yr old and is about $90/month. It is not a charity, it is a community, and the tithing helps it keep going. job
