    Denver/Colorado Springs

Hi all - DH and I will be taking a short vacation (3.5 days) to the Denver area. We will have brief visits with a nephew and a friend, but then want to see the scenery. We are planning to stay in the Colorado Springs area. Any suggestions for things to do or see? I want to take the cog railway...

    Bought a new car

Oh, how I loved my Pintos!! At the age of 20, bought my first new car, a 1975 yuck-green Pinto. Loved it! When it was 3 years old, 15K miles on it, some drunk in a big boat car ( I think it was a Lincoln) smashed it to bits. It was parked in front of my apartment. His car was hardly...

    people not on this forum

Last year I took a seasonal cashier job at a chain hobby store, just "for fun". I loved it - lots of chatter with customers about their projects, a big employee discount weekend, and I enjoyed just getting out of the house. Easy work & no stress when I left at the end of the day (usually 4...

Taxes on pension and 401k distributions

I posted something about this a little while back. I've taken a couple of distributions from my 401K, and my fund company (TRP) says they must take out 20% for the fed, and the regular state tax percentage. I questioned this, as we are nowhere near the 20% tax bracket, but they said there is...

Animals we share our lives with

Keith - from one who has lost three cats in the past 4 years, my deepest sympathy. Please don't feel guilty; these things happen, and we can't always plan for them. We are going through multiple medical issues with our 16+ year old cat now (Murphy, my avatar). We give her whatever she wants...

401K withdrawals and federal taxes (any accountants out there?)

Trooper - definitely not. I have already taken 3 separate withdrawals. Maybe it depends on your provider or your total balance, but I'd hate to think you would have to take the whole thing at once, especially if your balance was large. The taxes would be a killer!

    Your best musician?

We saw James Taylor at a concert, live with the Baltimore Symphony. Oh, my! He was amazing! He sang old favorites of course, but did some Gershwin and other stuff. The best concert I ever attended.

    Stupid things finance people say

Funny to see all of this in one place, and so true. My favorite one (when I hear it almost daily, I yell at the TV): "The Dow is down 50 points as investors react to news of [X]." Stop it, you're just making stuff up. "Stocks are down and no one knows why" is the only honest headline in this...

    Dentists

Oooooooooh, yeah! Many years ago, I went to a new dentist for the first time. It had been a couple of years since I had been to a dentist. He took a long look in my mouth, and said he saw about 17 (yes, seventeen) cavities that needed to be filled or fixed. He said we could do them a couple...

401K withdrawals and federal taxes (any accountants out there?)

And a big woo hoo for me - I just crossed from "recycles dryer sheets" to "Full time employment: Posting here." Guess I'm legit now. :)

Thanks for all the info! I had searched around the internet, but never could come up with the documentation, so thanks pu4uski and others.

401K withdrawals and federal taxes (any accountants out there?)

I retired after age 55, and am eligible to withdraw from my 401K without penalty. I have done that (up to the 15% tax rate) for the past 2 years. My fund company takes 20% federal taxes out of these withdrawals. I asked them about it, and they said they are required to. Yes, I get the...

    Squeezy the Pension Python

I know all teachers don't get such a deal, but I do have a hard time hearing about how teachers have it so tough. Please don't throw stones, I DID say that I know not all teachers get such a great deal. But a lot of them do.

Others reactions to your Financial Independence

Kramer - that's awesome! Secret agent... I really think that most of our family/friends don't really know how much we have. I think they wonder, but we haven't hit any resentment. We dress casual (OK, borderline sloppy) a lot of the time. One of our neighbors asked me not long ago if we had...

    Help with Firing FA

I'm late to this discussion, but I did the same thing a number of years ago. FA (a "friend" from my church) was doing some crazy things that I did not agree with. I called TRP and they yanked the whole thing for me. I notified the FA after the transfer was underway. He was ticked, but hey -...

Checkout charity - do you donate at the register?

We give hundreds to animal rescue groups every year, so why do I feel guilty not donating every time I check out at PetSmart???? I even volunteer there once a week, but I always think that they think I'm cheap not to donate the dollar or whatever. I'm over it, because my conscience is clear...

    When to replace stuff?

Someone mentioned china - when we cleaned out my grandparents' house, I ended up with the china. It stayed in boxes and went through one move, and for some reason I asked my brother and his wife if they wanted it. They were delighted, and they actually use it a lot, which makes me happy. We...

What was your worst lowly job?

This morning I went to my volunteer gig - taking care of the rescue cats at our local PetSmart. I was laughing to myself almost the whole time I was there, recalling the posts on this thread while I cleaned up after a couple of poo-flinging kittens! Usually the messes aren't too bad, but this...
