    Your toys/hobbies ?

My main hobbies are cars and reading. I still have the first car I bought when I turned 16, a Datsun 280Z and it's going to be restored this summer. I also have a Nissan 300ZX twin turbo I finished about 3 years ago. We drove it to the Tail of the Dragon last week and had a blast driving a total...

Calling all current or former entrepreneurs

Currently I own a business brokerage that specializes in swimming pool companies. I love the freedom of being an entrepreneur and couldn't imagine working for someone else. That being said I think in order to be successful as an entrepreneur you have to want it with ever fiber of yourself...

I've got a go pro Hero 3 and wondered if any of the drones mentioned allows you to mount a camera on it.

    Individual 401k

I'm looking at opening up an individual 401k and started doing some research on the Vangard website. I ran across this section and needed clarification: Employer contributions Maximum employer contribution per eligible employee is $52,000 for the 2014 tax year and $53,000 for the 2015 tax year...

"Millionaire Next Door" Author Thomas Stanley Killed

I remember reading the Millionaire Next Door during OBC (officer basic course) and it really opened my eyes. So much so that I had my wife read it and convinced her to save/invest her income while we lived off of mine. One of the best decisions we made fresh out of college. Sorry to hear about...

What concerts have you been to?

Last year DW and I went to the Essence Fest in New Orleans. It was a surprise for my wife and when I told she was more excited than when I asked her to marry me. :) The festival ran for three days and we saw Prince, Charlie Wilson, Erika Badu, Lionel Richie and a few other acts. It felt like a...

How to stay on track for ER with a kid?

Double Income No Kids! The first time I heard that was from our realtor. There are tons of ways to save money with kids. First, don't buy a lot of new born clothes since they grow so fast that they'll grow out of a lot of stuff before you get a chance to put it on them. While daycare and diapers...

    Life before FIRE

I work for myself and carve out a little time to go driving on Wednesdays. There is an amazing stretch of road not too far from my house. I don't think about anything but the next turn coming up. It takes about an hour and it's something I look forward to each week. This photo was taken in NC...

    TSP vs. military buyback

Greg V you are correct, we have 3 years to pay back her military service which gives us about 18 months to pay it back. We'll pay half this year and half next year while fully funding her TSP. Thanks again everyone.

    TSP vs. military buyback

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I forgot to mention our goal is to be able to take care of both this year. However our priority is to pay off our home this year. I'm just trying to come up with a plan b in case we can't accomplish everything we set out to. My wife's job is having HR stop...

    TSP vs. military buyback

It's been awhile since I've been on this site. After reading a few posts now I remember why I enjoyed it so much. There are so many smart people here from all walks of life willing to provide their prospective. My wife works for the Federal gov't and she's contributing to her TSP. Since she...

What do you do for a living?

I started working with a painter when I was 13, then once I became a "legal" worker I took orders at the border (Taco Bell). The manager wanted to promote me and I immediately got scared and thought I would end up working there forever. I joined the Army as a Supply Specialist and shortly...

Need help building a sales team

Cash for Clunker appliances - Texas style

Thanks for tip Tinlizzy. We can wait a few more months for the washer since it's already 13 years old! Looking back at the fiasco known as the Texas Rebate cluster!@@$. I think I would of had a better chance of securing a rebate by calling in. On the website many people here were able to get to...

Cash for Clunker appliances - Texas style

Thanks for the tip Telly. I went to the Lowes website and found a front load washer for 25% off. That's about what I would save using the rebate. Now if I can get the recycle rebate for the old one that would be great.

Cash for Clunker appliances - Texas style

I got as far as a web page that said 1% of the rebates were reserved but after that the site crashes. I wonder if traffic will die down later today but before the money is gone? Go to go hit refresh.

    Airline Baggage fees too high

What erks me are the airlines that don't tell you they charge for bags until AFTER you buy the tickets. Airtran pulled that on us on our last flight but this time we're flying Southwest to avoid those fees. Koolau is right, these tactics are shortsighted. They got me once but you better believe...

Our pool business as a road to retirement

The great thing about owning a business is if you search inside your business you'll learn something new everyday. I bought a book called "Duct Tape Marketing" by John Jantsch and highly recommend it. One of the lessons that resonated with me was that every business owner has a story. I found...

As travelers we are all lucky to speak English

Not only in travel is English the default language but when I was deployed to a NATO base the default language was English as well. Every foreign soldier spoke English fluently and I thought how convenient that I already knew English. :)

    Investing in lawsuits?

I also read somewhere that there are companies that will pay you for your life insurance policy. The payouts are based on age in relation to life expectancy. I am continually amazed at what can be considered an investment.
