I-Bond Interest Update at Treasury Direct

You can setup a Google Sheet to track your Series I bond values. The prototype is found at https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=389497 If you input a date, it shows you the values of your bonds as of that date. I have a version of this as a tab in my personal "Pension and Finances"...

Those Who don't/didn't do Roth Conversions

We are 69 and 67. Our pensions plus Social Security plus dividends (etc.) thrown off by mutual funds put us into the middle 22% bracket -- even before I take SS next year. Conversions don't make a lot of sense for us, IMHO. The only argument I've seen that I considered seriously is preparing...

Who gets paid if we have shutdown

Since a furloughed employee is subject to recall within a day (in some cases, 2 hours), going on a "vacation" is not practicable. Most furloughed employees are upset at not being able to do their jobs, worrying about stuff that will pile up when they return, and (if the furlough lasts weeks)...

    Are Stocks a Ponzi Scheme?

For a long time, your "only actual way" was the general principle for valuing stocks (or other types of investments). Any other way was susceptible to pump-and-dump. Only with the advent of regulated securities and accounting methods did the current idea of valuing a company based on its assets...

    Peru/Chile trip suggestions?

For Chile: Look into going to Easter Island (Rapa Nui). It is not cheap to fly there, as flights are a monopoly of the national airline. But it is a very impressive place. The people there built an entire pocket civilization on a tiny patch of land, far from anyone else. Eventually they had...

    Class of 2021

I just filed my paperwork to retire (from the Fed govt) on 31 Dec 2021 -- making into the class of 2021 by a hair. P.S. And announced it on Twitter.

    Class of 2021

Countdown app on my desktop say "649 Days left". I'm not expressing it in minutes (would be 933,344 - at least it's under a million now).

    Class of 2021

My plan is retire at the end of Jan 2021 - when I make 20 years in Federal service, the point at which the pension calculation jumps up by 10%. In my case, that will amount to about $3500 per year more than if I retire a month earlier. And by then I hope to have identified and trained my...

    Mt. Everest Base Camp Trek

Of course, the article is about climbing Everest, not about trekking to the lower reaches of it to get a good view.

Ankar Wat: Thailand - worth it?

Angkor is one of the top places I have ever been. In the last 10 years, I've been to the Egyptian Pyramids, the Mayan Pyramids, Machu Picchu, the Great Wall, and more that I can't jot down quickly. Angkor is the one I want to go back to. You hire a tuk-tuk (motorcycle-drawn taxi) and driver...

    bethesda

I live in Bethesda -- there are a lot of restaurants in the area around the Metro station. My favorite not-expensive places are Cafe Deluxe -- good inexpensive American food -- especially the sandwiches Matuba (Japanese) -- best for lunch - $15 all-you-can-eat rotary sushi bar Bethesda...

    Anyone got any travel planned?

I strongly recommend you fit in a trip to Angkor Wat and around (Siem Reap, Cambodia). Of all the places I've been, this is easily tops on my list to re-visit: The Angkor area contains many intricate temples and other sites, and takes a minimum of 3 days to see. We stayed at Two Dragons...

    SS benefits estimator

I have a friend who volunteered for medical studies (MRI scans) to get the payments, which count as earned income, to go on his SS record. He managed to eke out a few extra years on his SS record this way. However, he was being scanned here at the NIH, which pays pretty well for MRI scan...

    Curious SS questions?

See sscritic's reply under the thread Bogleheads :: View topic - Spouses and Soc Security Benefits -- the correct term is "file and suspend benefits", which the husband can do after age 66 (Full Retirement Age = FRA), and then the wife can file for spousal benefits only at her FRA. The rules...

    Curious SS questions?

A far better place to ask this question is at Bogleheads where poster 'sscritic' seems to know more about SS than anyone else on Earth. Also, once the husband dies, his wife does not receive the wife's benefit, but the widow's benefit, for which the rules are different.

    What did/do you do?

Applied mathematician turned brain-ologist by accident. Edit: and I love differential equations -- parabolic ones in particular. Linear algebra, of course, every mathematician has a very soft spot for.

Social Security: New rule for Withdrawal

Because there are so many people in the US and there are so many different situations. It is confusing, but the plethora of choices does give each individual/couple the chance to adapt the SS payout to their needs: * take SS early if you need it, or your life expectance is short * payouts for...

Social Security: New rule for Withdrawal

The poster "SScritic" over at the Bogleheads forum knows a huge amount about Social Security rules, and he's the one to try to get a response from. When he's not away, he seems to reply pretty rapidly -- within a day or so, usually with very detailed and clear explanations.

Best way to use/exchange dollars in Europe

If you have both a Visa and a MasterCard (sometimes called EuroCard in Yurp), take both with you. Some restaurants only take Visa and some only MC. And some only take cash. When we go, I usually get some cash at the airport upon arrival -- ATM if possible. Just enough to get by for a little...

Two linked problems & solutions: retirement savings and Social Security/Medicare

This, at least, is not quite true. If you are 65 and still covered by an employee group plan, you can delay your Medicare Part B enrollment until you leave that plan (say, at retirement), and then you have up to 8 months to enroll in Part B without a penalty.

    Ambien?

Somewhat off topic: We just saw the newish play "A Sleeping Country". If it comes near you, see it -- it is hilarious and poignant. About a woman who can't sleep at all, and her attempts to find out why, in the process annoying her fiance, dealing with her insane psychiatrist, and meeting an...
