I use Sagetv. Google bought them and killed it. Still works for me but you can't buy it now.

I cut the cable cord (sort of)

Comcast free for 1 year Cut comcast 1 year ago after having them for like 15 years. Put an antenna in the attic and connected a computer to the TV to act as a DVR and stream netflix and itunes. Probably spend less than $20 per month on TV. The high def signals available by antenna are great...

    Y2K Retirement?

Is a table like this realistic ? I'm not retired, but, if I were, the withdrawals would have dropped way before now. Probably starting in 2000.

Thanks. I missed that reference to the web site on the document. It wasn't enough that they underlined it and printed it in bold :)

    Pilgrim Baxter distribution

I received a check today from the "Fair Fund" established by the SEC to right some of the wrongs associated with market timing in the Pilgrim Baxter mutual funds. Problem is, the mutual fund was held in a SEP account. Does anyone know if I need to deposit this check back into the SEP, or, if I...

    Here we Go!

Just a quick thought on the consulting business. Have you asked any of your potential customers if they'd switch to working with you directly ? What if they won't or can't ? Maybe it's tough to get new vendors approved. Will your old company take you back or does competing with them mean you...

    American Funds

Isn't this the idea of an efficient market ? All those guys (and gals) with Billions (Trillions) to invest looking for the best deal. If that's the case, then the funds with the lowest expense rate (may) win.

    Asset allocation question

Thanks! This is complicated. Didn't Vanguard have a problem a few years ago where their value index got crushed during the collapse of growth stocks ? I think they were using P/B to determine if a stock was a value stock. Maybe I'll split the difference. Start with an equal weight of the etf's...

    Asset allocation question

I have a question about asset allocation and value vs growth. I thought it would be easy to put together a balanced value/growth portfolio using indexes: Example: 1. US equities 50% Vanguard Value Index: VTV 50% Vanguard Growth Index: VUG Morningstar says the Value/Blend/Growth ratios are...

    Correlations

Thanks! Another thing I just noticed. 2003 was a big year for all of the indexes. Removing that year from the calculation reduces the correlations by a large amount. For example: DODBX goes from 0.79 to 0.62.

    Correlations

I just used yearly returns and a somewhat different time period. Maybe that's the source of the difference. Or, since I used only yearly data, maybe this is one of those errors when calculating the statistics from a small sample size. For yearly returns I just used the yearly data from...

    Correlations

So, I've been going through my investments, reading investment books, thinking about slicing and dicing vs total market, etc. Being a little bored this morning I decided to put the last few years returns into a spreadsheet to see how the asset class correlations work out. Using the Excel...

What group can you join to get health insurance

I joined IEEE about a year ago with this in mind. Late in '06 IEEE decided to no longer write new medical policies. I didn't renew my IEEE membership. See: http://www.personal-plans.com/product/ieeeinsurance/ "...and note that the plan will no longer be accepting new enrollees."

    Risky New Investment Venue

Maybe this is a stupid comment... You could break down the borrowers into 3 groups: 1) Bad credit rating willing to pay a high interest rate. Do I really want to lend to someone who thinks paying me 18% is a good idea ? This seems very risky. 2) Good credit, low interest rate. What's the point...

    HIPAA question

Thank you for all the replys! It looks like Martha's comment "states comply with HIPAA in different ways" is the crux of the matter. I'm glad we have a lot of time to figure it out. I'd make some comment here about fixing the system but that's been done big time in some of the other posts!
