Should I stop payment on lost check?

Surely, in the USA, as well as Canada, a cheque dated Dec. 2018 is 'stall dated' and non-negotiable.

    remote start in new cars

Why? Well -40F is not unheard of here and -30F is common. Cars run better when warm. Pretty simple. The car must be in neutral and the parking brake must be set or RS no work. Which small mistake might be fatal?

    remote start in new cars

Not true. Both of my kids have MT cars with RS. It requires the driver to do a few things to enable the RS, but it ain't rocket surgery. YMMV of course.

    2022 Investment Performance Thread

I was one of those. Less than 3/4 of the way now, but time will tell. Most of my money is in the Canadian TSX which has not lost what the S&P has.

    Has anyone written their autobiography?

I did at lot of things in my youth that I wouldn't want the world to know of. Without them, my story would be beyond boring.

    Dual citizenship

I believe you and the OP are occupying the same boat. Therefore I think we are in agreement. Possibly my lack of the written "gift of gab" started a misunderstanding.

    Dual citizenship

I think not. Canada, I believe, has now stopped the inheritance of citizenship from those citizens born outside the country and who have never lived here.

Ford and GM not happy with their dealers

Dealers don't make their big dollars on new car sales. They make them on the service floor. Being Canadian (where dealers are prohibited by law from charging more than MSRP) I've noticed a few 'extra' charges but less than $1K. Still, I think, they are saving their new stock for old...

    Boast about your hometown

My "hometown" is now a farmer's field. When I grew up (on a farm a couple of miles away) it wasn't a booming place. It has 2 grain elevators, a garage, maybe a dozen houses and a general store. 50 years ago the garage and store closed, 40 years ago the elevators closed (and were bought by...

What is your financial Achilles' heel?

I have a similar experience. One VP i reported to wanted "yes men", I didn't qualify. I remember one day getting supreme sh!t from my VP for saying something he didn't agree with to the CEO. Later, the CEO told everyone how nice it was to have honest peons. My career slowed a bit. A year or...

Do "gifted" people have a moral obligation to work?

In post #94 you claimed a marginal tax rate of 65%. You may be surprised to find that the link quoted says the top marginal rate in 1980 was 60%. In post #102 you agreed that this was accurate. It showed a marginal tax rate of 35% on 4000 pounds for 1980. In post #98 you claimed a 1980...

9 things that will disappear in our lifetime

I'd contest this one. I'm not sure about most individuals, but some will feel their privacy is their own problem and stick to local storage. Where the 'cloud' is will matter. Recent changes to US law (ie Patriot Act) will ensure that, for instance, Canadian financial corporations will neither...

    The Success Indicator

Nor I, those ESO that increased almost 20 times put me over the "number". I drove the same old Ford Tempo for the first 15 years of my management status. We did, however, upgrade our house. Our old one was paid for. We bought the new one with cash. Then we sold the old one. Not too many...

Do "gifted" people have a moral obligation to work?

The point was that you claimed to have paid 2200 pounds tax on a 4000 pound income while agreeing that the top marginal tax rate on 4000 pounds of income was 35%. While I will ignore the lower rates on the first 1000, 4000 X .35 = 1400, no? Yes there is. The marginal are always higher, at...

Advice from MikeD or anyone. Scared.

I doubt I have anything intelligent to add to this thread but IMHO, if you "lawyer up", (s)he will want about 1/3 of any settlement including one that might have been offered without counsel. Make sure you have some agreement that protects you from all sides.
