    March Break in Myrtle Beach

I have been to Myrtle twice in the last three years but I do not have any great hotel suggestions. I did not book any tee times before we got to Myrtle and both times it worked in my favor. Many places seem to have special rates that only become available 48 hours or less in advance of a...

TAX Question: Implications of paying self dividends only

I know nothing about sole props. It may be that you can take a section 179 deduction with it.

TAX Question: Implications of paying self dividends only

I am not an accountant, but i stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night;)...so I will take a stab. I think you will find that under a S-corp, what you refer to profits (to be disbursed as a dividend) will not be taxed as a dividend. Your profits will be taxed the same in the same manner as...

    Where were you at 31?

I started getting serious about saving about the time I became 30. Since then, I have saved about 30 percent of my income. I also became a partner at the engineering firm where I work. Roughly half of my net worth is my equity in the company.

My net worth was about 157k when I was 31. Took another 6 years to pass $1,000,000.

Living from Paycheck to Paycheck in America

Texas: Most of our employees are white collar (engineering firm). That is what I found to be most surprising...many of the people who could not get through the weekend without being paid would be classified as middle to upper class.

Living from Paycheck to Paycheck in America

I also had to drink powdered milk as a child...it is nice to know I am not alone! I successfully repressed that memory until reading some of the above posts :p. Our family was old fashioned...dad worked and mom stayed home with the kids (all 5 of us). We looked forward to every other Friday...

    Buying into partnership

I became a partner at a sub S corp seven years ago. There are a multitude of ways to value a private business. Our value is determined as the book value plus a factor times the average profit over the past several years. We require new shareholders to pay their portion of the book value up...

    What was/is your occupation?

I did a little research and agree with all of the above...here is some additional info. He received his BS in Civil Engineering From WPI in three years, obtained an MBA from Syracuse, worked as an engineer/capital cost analyst and retired at 38.

Best route Across Pennsylvania - I-80 or I-76......?

I am from PA...I-80 will be quicker....I-76 is the PA Turnpike (a toll road) with slower speed limits in places. You will want to watch the weather because I-80 can get nasty.

Starting a business talking to young adults about finances?

It would be difficult to establish a business in this area for all the reasons previously mentioned. I never understood why financial issues were not part of my high school education. It would seem that skills such as establishing a household budget, balancing a checkbook, avoiding high interest...

    Too much togetherness

On a lighter note, this thread's topic reminded me of a conversation with one of my clients. He was just settling into retirement, and when I asked how things were going, he admitted having problems being around his wife 24/7. He told me that he was working on a home improvement project earlier...

    Engineering Career

Spanky, I have been a civil engineer employed at the same consulting firm all of my career (15 years and counting). I became a partner at the firm (entered management) about seven years ago. I decided to accept the partnership offer mainly for financial reasons, and things have gone well so far...

    fractional ownership

I bought a timeshare about six years ago (one of my two biggest financial blunders so far). I do have a deed for the property and equity. The equity is what I could sell the timeshare for to any willing buyer (which is likely to be less than what I paid for it). Maybe I am missing the boat but...

    Engineering Forums

Nords, You would not believe how many chicks I had to fight off in college when they found out I was an engineering major...must have been about....0 (with a # that high you gotta estimate)? Cons, I started in electrical enginering and transferrred to civil engineering after my freshman year. I...

Anyone in the age group of 30-39?

I am 37 and plan to retire at 52. Plan is to continue to max out simple IRA and invest after tax profits from my business into a taxable account. Current net worth is about 850k. Have no idea where I will locate when I retire.

Re: Looking for a 'high end' Gas BBQ Grill................ I have the weber "silver" and like it a lot. I think the main thing is to get stainless parts. I bought a cheap grill a number of years ago and was constantly replacing rusted parts. My weber grill is about five or six years old now and...

    From technical to management position

Aaron, I think all the good advice has already been given.  That being said, I am a civil engineer who became a partner in the consulting firm where I work at the relatively young age of 30 (same as you).  Looking back over the last seven years, I can honestly say I was not quite ready to become...

    NC or PA?

I live in Central PA...cost of living is low, plenty of nature (saw deer, turkey, ring neck pheasant, owls, woodpeckers and a muskrat in the last two weeks....and I am not a hunter), lifestyle is slow, and people are nice. Basically only requirement here is that you have to be a Penn State and...

    Golf

Golf bug bit me hard about two years ago.  I was using an old  set but recently upgraded my clubs as follows.  Driver: Taylor Made R5 (450 cc club is large and very forgiving on miss hits).  Long Irons: Taylor Made Rescue Mid Hybrids (replaces hard to hit 3 and 4 irons).  Irons: Ping G5...

    Annual review and raise, WTF!?

Laurence, I would be ecstatic to get a 12% raise in the fall followed by a 1.5% raise in the spring. Your story reminds me of a young engineer at my firm. His starting salary six years ago was around 34k...today he makes about 60k. The first five raises he received averaged close to 10% per year...
