How to deal with taxable holdings with large gains

Right, it’s the taxable income which is after the standard deduction or Schedule A deductions. So for MFJ the 2024 limit is $94,050 and that’s after subtracting the $29,200 standard deduction from your AGI. A little higher standard deduction if one or more of you is over 65. Sometime folks add...

    The Day Has Finally Come.....

Well I tell you, I just didn’t look back. I had so much to look forward to (travel for sure). I had scheduled a major trip a week after my retirement date and that worked out very well - I was busy getting ready for the trip and then really enjoying the trip and marveling about not having to...

    Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

One thing this video shows clearly is that the train (heading west) engines and front cars section is moving right along with the derailed cars left behind in a dust cloud. It’s also amazing that this pickup dashcam captured the Welcome to New Mexico sign just before the explosion. It just so...

    Condo common area cleaning dilemma

I see the haphazard building outside our development (with HOA). Big mansions surrounded by tiny junky home lots. No thanks!

There have been many massive migrations in that area over the millennia. Just look at what happened after the western Roman Empire collapsed.

Interesting. It was that or another 26-week T-Bill which I already have plenty of, so basically a wash. It will be interesting. Interest rates have not come down as quickly as most people expected.

How to deal with taxable holdings with large gains

Index funds still pay out dividends (mostly qualified), usually a very small percentage, so these contribute to your AGI and reduce the amount for capital gains to stay within the 0% cap gains tax threshold. Over many years I’ve been reducing the managed funds in our taxable account as...

Well believe it or not I’ve ordered the callable JP Morgan CD 1yr at 5.35%. It’s callable after 6 months. I was hoping to buy a 52-week T-bill above 5.2% but it has dropped back under that over the past couple of weeks.

Activity might be the most important thing.

I’m most hoping to avoid dementia. Supposedly a diet low enough in carbs to maintain at least mild ketosis helps considerably, and is even used as therapy for those suffering from dementia as the brain readily takes up ketones for energy when it has difficulty taking up glucose due to brain...

    Maintaining our relationship in retirement.

+1 It may be inevitable for us. Other than family I’m not investing in a social network just in case I’m the one left behind. I would rather make the most of my time with DH. I will just have to live with the aftermath if it happens. We did exactly that. 5 glorious years. It was a wonderful...

Medigap Shopping: Closing the Book & Rate Increases

Yes, creating a monster. It took decades to materialize, but was probably inevitable given the for-profit incentive. It could also be that poorer and sicker people (yes there is a correlation) are more heavily represented in the Medicare Advantage group?

Medigap Shopping: Closing the Book & Rate Increases

Very low I would think. It was a way to encourage people to try Medicare Advantage which has been pushed hard as lower cost overall to the Medicare system. People were reluctant in the face of losing their traditional option. However I don’t think this lower cost is true anymore as Medicare...

    2024 Investment Performance Thread

Withdrawals or additions are not supposed to be included in the performance calculation. There are various ways to calculate this. For me it’s easy because I only withdraw annually on Jan 1 and my calcs compare the portfolio value after that withdrawal.

55 Days--almost enough time to slowly drive and hike around New Zealand.

Just wow! We drink mostly reds but we do love Sancerre (Sauvignon Blanc from a town in the Loire Valley France) and we did eventually try the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc but it doesn’t come close IMO.

Brokered CDs were really behind for a while which is why I bout bank CDs in Dec and Jan. Otherwise I am rolling over all my T-bills these days. FWIW the online banks seem to offer their best special CD rates in Dec and early Jan. I guess they are trying to attract end of year new money. Some...
