    best city in america

I'm in Louisiana. I agree with you about cold weather. I never had to live in it, and never plan to. But there's a lot of beauty up north I'd like to see.

Please tell me I can retire

Yes. The $70k figure is the reduced amount with survivor benefits. The only issue is if my wife would die in the two years after I retire. Then I wouldn't get her pension, and I'd be screwed. I'm thinking of getting a term life policy during that period.

Please tell me I can retire

Answers: We both work in the public sector, so the pensions and health coverage are as secure as anyone else's, if not more so. State employees do not contribute to Social Security, so I won't be eligible, but my wife will. Both will be Medicare eligible. We're currently 48 and 47 years old...

Please tell me I can retire

I hope to retire in two years. My wife will work two years after that, because of the way her retirement plan is set up (I could also work two more years, but all I'd get is older). After we're both retired our total pensions will be about $70k per year -- quite a bit less than we make now...

    best city in america

The "best" city in all the polls I've seen is rarely the most affordable. I plan to stay where I am for quite a while (I'm not retired yet, but don't plan to move after retirement). I live in a small town that has little to offer, but it has two advantages: The cost of living is low, and it's...

    Hip Replacement Surgery - Dangerous?

I can't help but believe that this is influenced by the fact that most THR patients are elderly. Younger patients would probably be at much lower risk. I'd like to see the numbers broken down by age. I was 39 when I had a THR. I didn't feel like it was a risky surgery, nor did my surgeon...

23 yr old, debt free besides the mtg, where do I go from here?

You're getting an awfully low return. That's what you'll want at age 60. For now, go for higher return investments. They carry more risk, but you're investing long term, and you'll come out way ahead with performance mutual funds. My advice: sock away 25% of your income if you can afford...

    Any w*rk from home ideas?

I hope to work from home when I retire. I'm a few years away from ER and I am an artist. My skill level is not where it needs to be, so I'm painting just about every day to be able to approach galleries later. I'm not suggesting you do this. I'm just saying that work-at-home ideas are a dime a...

How much life insurance do you carry?

We have very little, less than 1x We have a growing estate (5x) and no debt, and no dependants, so we really don't need the insurance anymore. I guess we'll drop the policies someday.
