Where do you see the recession

A few local observations. One neighbor cut back to 4 days a week, state worker. Another neighbor, single mom/ healthcare worker, cut back to about 2/3 time. I live about 1/4 mile from two major rail lines, a Norfolk Southern Intermodal line and Conrail. Rail traffic is almost dead at night...

So cheap that nothing good is left

Even some of the good old stuff isn't that great. I recently refinished an old dresser that has been in the family for about 140 years. Much to my surprise only the front and top were solid walnut, the sides were stained poplar. Even years ago there were efforts to economize and make stuff...

So cheap that nothing good is left

You must be talking about the infamous Yazoo Clay. Even Frank Lloyd Wright didn't understand about Yazoo Clay. There is a Wright house someplace in the south that has been plagued by the clay for years. Sections of the house have moved up and down several inches. I remember reading about...

So cheap that nothing good is left

As the owner of a middle of the run 79 year old home I cringe every time I hear someone say, "they sure don't build them like they used too". If those people only knew. Even the nice old ones had their share of flaws and problems. Nothing is plumb or square and most things were not...

    Bank Fees Increase

Freebird.......... This scenario always reminds me of my grandfather... He used to say; The only people in the world that can do business with an empty wagon are the trash man and the undertaker. :coolsmiley: For sure it would be cheaper for these people to forgo the checking account and...

    Bank Fees Increase

A story with a high whine factor with respect to bank fees. Banks' 'courtesy' loans at soaring rates irk consumers - USATODAY.com The 10% of checking accounts with the lowest balances generate about 40% of overdraft revenue I would call it "bankers revenge" for writing yourself a...

Wrong night to hang around the office

My niece and her husband hung around the office a little too long this evening. That's her 2007 Honda van and his 2002 red Accord in the parking lot. Nothing like soggy carpets. :( Latham Ny area.

    Bank Fees Increase

You best believe banks make a fortune from fees. My neighbor is a recently retired banker and he said their all time best money maker was bad check charges. It seems the banks know just the right pressure point to hit the fools that can't control their spending or balance their checkbooks...

    End of Recession (or not)

    Cash For Clunkers

I just wonder if anyone in Congress did their homework before going off on the Cash for Clunkers tangent? On the surface it might look attractive for boosting car sales but so far I haven't seen the market research data to support the thinking. A billion bucks could stimulate car sales between...

    Explain a CD ladder please

In the past year I renewed two regular CD's before they matured without penalty. One was a five year that I got in April 2008 and by June 2008 the rate had gone up about 1/2%. The other was a five year CD that matured in April this year. As I was watching rates fall I decided to renew it in...

    USPS shennanigans

I stumbled into an interesting Post Office game several years ago and figured they made out like bandits. The City installed new streetlights and each household was billed about $750. Wow, how do all you get off lounging around all day? I've been hitting the bricks early every day for the last week. Lots of trips to the garden store and piles of plants and piles of bags of mulch. Doing a little updating on the landscaping around the house, it's only been 24 years...
