    Electric Vehicles - Models Discussion

Yeah, I just bought a used 2021 Kia Niro EX PHEV to replace my 2008 Kia Rondo. I’m generally not interested in being an early adopter of new technologies, so PHEV is a great baby step for me. I’m not a big fan of change, so I bought a car that is essentially the same car I had with 13 years of...

Dave Ramsey rips the 4% rule again today.

Dave Ramsey is often angrily and aggressively and completely wrong. He shows zero understanding of sequence of return risk. I don’t think anyone should look to him for advice on anything, since he seems incapable of actually thinking about anything in a non-rote, dogmatic manner. Yuck.

    Covid Getting Closer to Home

We’re fine. My close friend’s family is now going thru the same thing, but their kids and his wife are unvaccinated because his wife read something on Facebook and he wasn’t up for the fight with her. His daughter’s fever got up to 104 degrees before Tylenol knocked it back down to 101...

    Covid Getting Closer to Home

Chalk my family up for four breakthru cases. My 10-year-old daughter got flu-like symptoms on 1/17 that lasted 2-3 days. The rest of us were all sick within a week. The other daughter had the same 2-3 day experience. My wife and I had a week of flu symptoms and another week or so of...

    The Cryptocurrency Thread 2

A very interesting timeline of Crypto/NFT scams, hacks, and fails is kept by Molly White here- https://web3isgoinggreat.com/ Something sketchy is happening pretty much every day. On the plus side, the NFT space is so terrible that it makes plain old crypto look FDIC insured in comparison.

    The Cryptocurrency Thread 2

This about the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. This is a real project, not a parody, but I don’t think a parody video could actually be more ridiculous. I’ve watched about a half-dozen YouTube videos digging into the details of this. Cryptoland This is the Fyre Festival of Crypto- Caveat...

    Will streaming services take over?

The T-mobile internet plan is unlimited data. You cannot take the device to someplace else and use it.

    Will streaming services take over?

T-mobile’s 5G home internet does the trick for me. You need to be in an area where they’ve got it built out, but I really don’t notice much difference in speeds from the cable I used to have. I just did a Speedtest and got 600 down/60 up. It varies a lot by time of day and area, but for us it...

100% ALL IN on one stock. Safe??

My first job out of college was at Comdisco. I actually met the CEO Nicholas Pontikes once when he came to visit our office. He was the son of the founder and managed to destroy a nice solid business by chasing every stupid technology fad of the time. My impression of him was that he was an...

100% ALL IN on one stock. Safe??

I would at least mention that it might be a good idea to diversify a little. He probably won’t listen, but I like to at least make a token effort to help people I know avoid catastrophic mistakes. I can’t imagine a riskier stock to have 100% of your net worth in, TBH. I actually made a bet (...

Are you preparing for life disruptions from this winter/Omicron COVID surge?

I’m taking my queue from my state’s hospitalizations and deaths ( I’m in Minnesota). I’m not particularly concerned with getting it myself, since most everyone I’m close to is vaxed/boosted. I just want to do my part to keep the hospitals out of dying in the street mode. We are still dealing...

Did you return to past hobbies?

I have a number of hobbies that I have cycled thru over the years that I could see doing more of in retirement. My interest in each of them ebbs and flows depending on my free time and moods, but I’ve come back to each of them in the past. Aquarium fish breeding, comic book collecting and...

Are you preparing for life disruptions from this winter/Omicron COVID surge?

I’m expecting that the rapid spread of Omicron will probably cause disruptions at stores/restaurants/schools in January. Here in Minnesota, we were just seeing the Delta wave start to recede. We had a case in each of our daughters’ classes right before Christmas break that we had to test for (...

How Will Inflation Affect Your 2022 Planned Spend?

I’m sure we will spend more next year than this year, but I don’t think it is likely to alter much that we do significantly. The one change I am making involves my comic collecting hobby. I’ve collected vintage comics for a long time, and there has been a general upward trend in prices of key...

What to do with big payoff?

Paying off your low-interest rate mortgage lowers your risk, but you typically end up with less money because investments normally outperform the interest rate you are paying. The key work being "normally." I lean towards paying down the mortgage as I get older and the numbers get bigger, but...

Inflation: Official Rate vs. Observed Rate

I use the self checkout when I have a small number of items that don’t involve produce. I always end up having to wait for an attendant anyway when I have produce because I mess up the process somehow. If I have a bunch of stuff I want the help bagging and the extra room of a normal checkout line.

New heavily mutated variant B.1.1.529 in South Africa raises concern

Yeah, it’s not even clear that the new variant originated in SA. They may have just been the first to discover it. The range of possible concern here ranges from this is good ( Omicron is milder and outcompetes Delta ), to meh ( Omicron doesn’t actually outcompete Delta ), to very bad (...

FDA Approves Booster Shot for People with Weakened Immune Systems

That appears to be the standard for the boosters. They gave me a half dose as well.

Is an extra year of w*rk worth $2700 annually?

Is the pension going to provide most of your retirement income? If so, then I think I probably would work the extra year, since you are running things tight enough that if something goes wrong ( say an unexpected increase in expenses) you could end up in a tight spot, and that extra money could...

FDA Approves Booster Shot for People with Weakened Immune Systems

I got the Moderna booster a couple of weeks ago. Just a little arm soreness and very slight flu-like achiness at the joints that lasted a day or so. It was less impactful than my original shots, which gave me a lot of fatigue the day after getting them.

FDA Approves Booster Shot for People with Weakened Immune Systems

Yup. Get the booster and don't expend a lot of worry on Omicron until we know what we are dealing with.

New heavily mutated variant B.1.1.529 in South Africa raises concern

Florida was an international example of failure. They managed to get per capita deaths rates this summer nearly as high as New York’s despite having a vaccine available and over a year of additional knowledge on how to mitigate the spread of and treat the virus. If Florida had been actively...

New heavily mutated variant B.1.1.529 in South Africa raises concern

Florida and most of the rest of the South had horrible rate and death peaks a couple months ago. Their deaths/capita have been really bad compared to anywhere but New York and New Jersey at the very beginning. I think their rates are low at this point because pretty much everyone unvaccinated...
