I can see that for unrealized gains. I'd probably cash out everything first and take care of the tax liability for that year though. Once living abroad, I would move from cash to stocks again. From that point on, all dividends, interest and captial gains would be legally free from US...

    Canadian Guy with more questions

Back in Sept 2006 I posted to this forum and Nords described me as "teetering on the brink of ER". I'm 35, single, and my financial breakdown was: 520K: stocks (I invest myself through Ameritrade) 150K: HSBC direct (5% apy) 225K: 401K/IRAs 75K: home equity (still have 140K mortgage @4.75%)...

    35, pondering ER

Re: Question and input for you Canadian Eagle -- 1. You're right, it is more than salary that has allowed me to save about 1M over 10 years. I was very fortunate to land at a small company that has enjoyed steady growth and success. The company was acquired in 2000, and the owner was very...

Those are wise words. I shouldn't take for granted the opportunity I have to continue to grow my net worth significantly over the next few years.

    35, pondering ER

I've indeed thought about starting a family, but that would delay any ER plans significantly. That makes me sound very selfish, but that's not the main reason what I am skeptical about marriage. To be brutally honest, I'm not sure if it's worth the potential risk/pain. Now before you think I'm...

    35, pondering ER

First, I wanted to thank everyone for the informative and interesting posts on this forum. Bit of background on myself -- I am 35, single, born/raised in Canada, lived and worked in the US the past 10 years in the video game business (programmer). I've thought about ER for a few years now...
