    Freeze credit?

I froze credit with the big3 agencies yesterday, and got a freebie w equifax too. Maybe someone at equifax is trying to do damage control?

    Amazon Prime Day

I've had one for a few months now and like it. It doesn't replace a good vacuum, but lets me go longer between vacuuming and keeps the floors (mostly wood, some area rugs) much less dusty/gritty. I no longer find dust balls under the beds and couch when I have to look/crawl under there. My SO is...

Is this "really" a 2% credit card ?

I've had this card for a month or two (converted from a different Citi card), and so far it is accruing rewards as advertised. You can redeem for a statement credit once you hit $25 in rewards. I haven't hit that threshold yet so haven't actually redeemed, but looks like it's just a few clicks...

    my experience with Obamacare/CoveredCA

Update: I called Kaiser today and am finally in their system! Paid my premium over the phone and coverage is retroactive to the date specified in my original application. I never did hear back from a CoveredCA supervisor about my escalated case though.

    my experience with Obamacare/CoveredCA

Thanks for all the suggestions. I should clarify - it's possible I will be eligible for a subsidy in 2015, which is why I applied through the exchange. In retrospect, maybe I should have gone through Kaiser directly for now, then used the exchange during open enrollment in November. I tried...

    my experience with Obamacare/CoveredCA

I left my fulltime job in August (hooray) and decided to apply for health insurance through the California exchange, CoveredCA. I was able to sign up for a Kaiser Permanente Bronze high-deductible plan, and the web site said it would submit my info to Kaiser and that Kaiser would bill me...

    fun with spreadsheets

A bit of self-centered musing: Recently I hit a significant milestone in my FIRE portfolio. It so happens that in 1996, my then-SO introduced me to the concept of index investing, and I created my first spreadsheet projecting my net worth. It made assumptions about stock returns (I started...

What's Your Non-Equity Portfolio Look Like?

no TBM? I'm surprised not many people are listing a Total Bond fund among their holdings in this thread. It may not be optimal, especially in today's interest rate environment, but as a long term holding on autopilot it seems fine. My non-equity portion is 50% TBM and 50% TIPs fund. Their...

Looking for slim front pocket wallet or ...

Oh yeah, some of those reviews don't look so good! I'm happy with mine (not a leather version, trifold), but if I didn't keep the card slots full maybe I'd have similar problems with cards slipping out.

big skinny I have a trifold wallet from Big Skinny (Wallet-World’s Thinnest Wallets! A Thin, Slim, Flat Wallet by Big Skinny). It's held up well for over a year and has good carrying capacity. They have several different designs, all meant for people who want thin wallets.

10 new uses for dryer sheets

Don't remember seeing this posted here before: 101 New Uses for Everyday Things | RealSimple.com I was surprised by this one: 5. Loosen caked-on food from a pan. Place a fresh sheet in the bottom of a dirty pan, fill with lukewarm tap water, and let sit in the sink overnight. The pan...

Surprising reactions when DW says I retired

Reading all these responses from people who would love to spend more (most?) of their time with spouses makes me feel a bit weird. We currently both work, but spend most weeknights and generally half of the weekends together. No kids, so this is one-on-one time. Both as an introvert and also in...

Tell your LBYM 'conversion' story here

My moment of enlightenment was in my mid teens. I always liked to do things my own way, and the teen years were filled with the usual angst of disagreeing with my parents about my way vs their way. A couple years of this, and it dawned on me that if I had enough money to live on my own, nobody...

How to get help for crushing, chronic sciatica

Very sorry to hear about your continuing pain issues! In the interest of just getting ideas out there, how about yoga (there are many different kinds, maybe one that emphasizes stretching and strength poses), or trigger point therapy/massage? A relative has used this book to self-massage...

Should I give up group HI and apply for individual policy?

The only conversion policy I've heard of is via the HIPAA rules. If that's what you're referring to, I'm not eligible according to the application: it says to get a HIPAA policy, you must not be eligible for any kind of group HI. Yes, plenty of unhappy coworkers here! Many have been...

Should I give up group HI and apply for individual policy?

Based on some of your responses, maybe I'm being too optimistic about being able to get the individual coverage. I did speak to an insurance broker about applying to this HMO, and was advised that they usually reject outright (instead of offering coverage with exclusions), but that I might as...

Should I give up group HI and apply for individual policy?

Not yet, but none of the questions on the application required me to disclose the annual MRIs. They ask things like "Have you been treated or diagnosed" for certain conditions within the past 5 years. Maybe someone more knowledgeable in the insurance field can correct me, but I don't think...

Should I give up group HI and apply for individual policy?

My employer recently decided to stop offering my particular group health insurance plan which I've been on for several years. Instead, employees are being offered a different set of group plans which are significantly more expensive. Since my current plan is an HMO, I will not be able to...

    Antique Violin

+1 to Ha's advice. I'm a violinist and amateur luthier. Get it cleaned and checked out by a professional. This shouldn't cost a huge amount, but it's easy to damage the varnish with improper cleaning. Don't tighten the strings or put new ones on until a luthier has made sure it's set up...

    Son wants to waste money

At that age, let him use his own money. If it turns out to be a waste, that could be a valuable lesson worth much more than $300.
