Buying in a rural county as an older family

I live in a very rural area and was recently diagnosed with a serious but treatable disease. Local hospitals and doctors don't have the expertise that my condition requires. So, I travel 2 hours, sometimes overnight, to a major metropolitan medical facility for treatment. We have older...

Do You Have an Air Fryer?

We've had an Instant Vortex for a few months and love it. Fast, easy to clean and a good size for the two of us. Along with the food already noted, it makes great grilled cheese sandwiches and reheated pizza slices have nice crispy crust. Many frozen entrees now have air fryer instructions.

    Avalon River cruise excursions

We returned from our first river cruise on Expression Amsterdam-Basel earlier this month. We really enjoyed it. But, we took only one optional excursion. We toured the Maginot Line and found it a fascinating informative piece of WWII history and worth the fare. It's underground, so bring a...

    Inflatable Kayak Suggestions

We have been happy with our Sea Eagle. The company has generous trial and return policies. They replaced our boat after 2.5 years when I pointed out a seam defect. We also have an aftermarket sailing rig which works quite well. But the boat and sail take some time to set up. We use a 12...

Beyond Meat Burger and Impossible Burger 2.0

My wife and I (both vegetarians) stopped at Burger King last week. The Impossible Whopper was very good. But, it won't help your waistline at only 30 fewer calories than the regular Whopper. :) They also offered the option of having the Impossible burger cooked separately from the meat if...

Am I alone? Or do others find themselves trying to actively disengage from the news?

I've tuned out most TV as well. Occasionally BBC/PBS is tuned in. But, negativity sells, positive stories don't. Getting a broader perspective has helped me realize that we don't live in the worst of times (not that they couldn't be better). Far from it. Stephen Pinker puts it in historical...

4% Rule and Target Date Funds

The author here concludes that the safe withdrawal rate for a 30 year retirement using Target Date funds is well below the accepted 4% rule because they do not re-balance to maintain a 50/50 portfolio. Most stop around 40/60. His argument seems sensible. If he's correct, I might have to make...
