    Will vs Trust

Talk me through this. Advice was given and accepted 13 years ago, updated everything 2 years ago. Substantial chunks go straight to kids as contingent if wife and I check out at the same time. Testamentary trust issue as written today would go away in 16 years but if I'm still around in 10...

    Will vs Trust

Will with testamentary trust for minor children some items have wife as beneficiary and kids as contingent other have wife as primary and trust as contingent beneficiary. Trustee has higher NW higher income AND more frugal lifestyle than I do so there is certainly no motive for him to misbehave...

More Real Estate Fraud -- Short Sales

Not sure if it's state specific but around these parts the realtors fiduciary responsibility is to the seller. We can go out and sign a buyers agent agreement and shift that responsibility. If I just call a realtor go look at houses and make an offer without that agreement good ones will work on...

    National Do Not Call Registry

Thanks Gindie. Mostly I've stopped answering the phone but on the rare occasion I get caught by a telemarketer I consider it my civic duty to keep them on the line as long as possible, as MPaquette suggested I have fun with it. Though I'm aware of the futility of my thought process. I've...

    Poll: Casey Anthony

I also find the coverage shocking/overwhelming. Changed the channel whenever it came on and was surprised to see live coverage yesterday when I thought there was a guilty verdict a week or two ago.

Yet another scary study on how poor Americans are...

I don't think the age is past. It's hard for me to understand why LBYM isn't more popular. I can't imagine borrowing money ever again. The things you can do and choices you can make when you have the improved cash flow of no payments and a net worth to smooth out bumps in the road feels so...

    Medical on car insurance?

I use a HDHP almost never buy extended warranties run 1k deductible on car ins. etc. etc. and I pay for med ins. on my auto. Megacorp (preHDHP) would send warning memo's annually about the need for us to carry, as they stated health ins would not cover car accidents. Urban legends? I believe...

Feedback on My Allocation and Direction

Since none of us knows future tax rates there is something to be said for "tax diversification" (taxable/traditional ira's & roth) and then managing how you move the money out. When you look at your AA it should be a snapshot of ALL your assets. From an AA perspective it doesn't matter that one...

Feedback on My Allocation and Direction

Sounds like you're getting an institutional rate leaving you with a low expense ratio. 401k fees can be quite murky depending on your company and the plan. Looks like you're 85/15 for an AA. Is that the allocation you want at this time? I guess there are pros&cons depending on current income...

Feedback on My Allocation and Direction

My rule of thumb is to try to avoid paying more than Vanguard would charge me for the same type fund. 1.2 is a bit high though many are worse. S&P 500 is up a lot more than 15% since June 09 so tough to make the argument that the fee is okay because of the great performance. Focus on your...

Feedback on My Allocation and Direction

keep in mind if you are buying and selling within a 401k or IRA there is no taxable event to be concerned with. Using new money as you describe will work fine while your portfolio is small. After a few years and some growth you may not have enough new money to close the gaps so buying and...

49 years old and not going back

Focus on the family time and enjoy. When your son leaves for college if you still have unmet financial goals (college funding, retirement for DW etc...) you can always get another j#b you would only be 53.

    Annual Checkup

401k is an employee retirement plan. You can fully fund roths for both of you (5k each) see Amethyst #1 above. I would (and did) go eliminate the debt. The improved cash flow and lower levels of risk make the investing much more enjoyable and will make take a lot of stress out of adding a baby...

    My Ooma VOIP phone

We weren't quite ready to cancel the home phone with kids still home. Thanks for the prompt! I've been considering ooma or vonage or magic jack, for some time. Bought ooma today and very easy install. Will take about 5 months to recoup my $199.

Co-Signing a mortgage - mortgage interest deduction question.

Ally, I'm reading this as you have survived and thrived I hope all is well. I have had a rather charmed life and as I think back to the few setbacks I've had I can't think of any that didn't turn into a benefit to me as things unfolded. Examples include Dumb investments that taught me not to do...

Co-Signing a mortgage - mortgage interest deduction question.

Disappointed, it is highly unlikely you are helping your niece and very likely you are hurting her and your familiy and your future relationship with your niece. The reason the bank wants a co-signer is because they don't believe she can/will pay and they make their living evaluating these...

    401 (k) question

Yep, been on the receiving end of those distributions. Usually get a heads up from Payroll in October of what they expect the max to be for HCE. I just look at the trend for the last several years (it is quite stable) and target enough below that to avoid having to deal with the extra paperwork.
