NYTimes Article - Meet the FIRE Savers

Thanks for the link to the well written article. I, for one, am happy to be part of this quiet, rambling corner of the ER universe.

    Bid to upgrade flights?

How much extra were you willing to pay for premium seats? I would use that as a guide. We've found that the economy premium seats on United/Lufthansa make for a much more comfortable overnight flight. For us, the extra leg room gives the best value. We're not tall, but being able to stretch our...

WSJ - Big mistakes people make in Medicare

So true. We forget that we, as a group, are very savvy financially & have above average wealth/incomes. I found this spreadsheet online that calculates 20 year costs of a few medicare options with some (to my non-medicare age ears) reasonable assumptions. Since it is a spreadsheet, you can make...

    Using ChatGPT for travel routes

I tried a simple version of your query " "Find me a route by road from Spokane washington to Orlando. Maximum daily distance of 400 miles" ..with Google's Gemini. It showed me the google maps route & asked me to break it up into 400 mile segments. Very disappointing. CoPilot was a bit...

shameless ask for praise for walking

Look for classes geared to older adults that includes weight training & cardio. You'll go at your own pace and do more as you get stronger. My 89 year old FiL goes to Silver Sneakers and chair yoga classes 5 days a week. He even tried a zumba class for a while. Besides the exercise, he gets some...

shameless ask for praise for walking

Good for you! The only time I walk that much in a day is on a hike later in the summer when we have some hiking miles under our belt for the year. I love walking. It always puts me in a better mood (I'm usually in a good one). And I like being outdoors - a walk on the treadmill doesn't do it...

How Is OEM Windows License Transferred To Different PC Owner?

I don't think you're going to get a definitive answer here, but I believe your thinking is right. Your relative has to create a user on the system & then log into their microsoft account (if they wish). BTW, Microsoft will sunset Windows 10 next year (2025), so there will (may?) not be any more...

    Washington State road trip

I didn't see the Palouse being mentioned. If you're in eastern WA (near Walla Walla or Spokane), don't miss it.

Calling all spreadsheet geeks. Spend down plan.

I agree with exchme - use the bogleheads spreadsheet or pralana gold. Taxes have complex interactions and it is better to use a vetted tool that has a large, interested audience & is updated regularly. To explain your plan to another person, use graphs rather than a spreadsheet.

Medigap plan G vs plan N

It has been very informative indeed. If you can afford the Plan G premiums today and could afford 2x to 3x the premiums in the future, it is definitely the simpler of the two plans. The amount you potentially save with a plan N may not mean much to someone with the means to afford the...

Medigap plan G vs plan N

I found this Youtube video by a retired guy who compares Plans G & N. He shows the analysis he did to make that decision and states that 2 years in, he's happy with his choice. An interesting data point - the co-pays in plan N are legislated to be $20/doc vist & $50/ER visit. They are not...

    So grateful for the ACA

We were in NJ when we ER'd so guaranteed issue even before ACA, but the community rating premiums were very high. We applied for insurance in CO before finalizing our move. If we were denied, we would have had to change plans, but luckily, we were approved. We moved and ACA came around a...

    Paying estimated tax using eftps

This is the first time I'm trying to use EFTPS to pay estimated tax. I don't see a 1040-ES form in EFTPS. Do I just select 1040? If someone can help list the steps, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

    Risk-based retirement income guardrails

As explained in the article, risk, in this case, is the probability of your portfolio supporting your withdrawal needs for the rest of your estimated life. You estimate that risk by seeing how your plan would have fared historically or use a monte-carlo simulation.

    All Your Worth (Book Review)

Good review. For people on these forums, it is probably all old hat & most have their own ways/formulas for saving money. Otherwise, they wouldn't be here. But that doesn't detract from the value of a book like this. Coincidentally, the first time I heard about this book was earlier this week...
