Glad to see you and other familiar members still posting.

Retired for more than 7 years, what % has your NW increased or decreased?

I have Social Security and a very conservative portfolio that is up about 5% from the day I retired. I take between 4-5%, maybe could take more but have a lifetime frugality addiction. I prefer to think of it as having X months of expenses above the portfolio principal. I expected to use “the...

    News of Khan

I loved her for hating w*rk and swearing she would sooner pull all her fingernails out than go back. I actually think of her often and her relevant-to-so-many-situations: [I’ll move] “when the cat dies”. She was totally relevant to this forum and will be missed, even by those of us who don’t...

Towns and Cities with Free Public Transportation

Thanks, Alan. I’m not really back, public transit is just a favorite topic. (will send PM) Back on topic: The National Park Service provides free shuttles. I occasionally use it in and to the San Francisco Presidio, (it has a stop two blocks steeply downhill from my apt.). They make a...

Towns and Cities with Free Public Transportation

I grew up in a township with a volunteer fire dept., septic tanks; we hauled our garbage to the dump; you should have seem the snowdrifts we walked thru uphill to get to school... But yes, we had all the other stuff you mention and we paid taxes.

Towns and Cities with Free Public Transportation

Hello, mayor of the forum. It’s like the old joke about the child who didn’t speak until he was 4-yrs.old. Said he had no complaints until then. Nine years! Time flies when you’re enjoying not going to work.

Towns and Cities with Free Public Transportation

Hi all. Years ago, former Mayor Gavin Newsom wanted free Muni (City and County of San Francisco transit system) for all. One of the reasons was that it is so hard to collect & process fares, especially the ones in cash; also boarding & transit time is much faster without fare payments. It...

    Using Slim Fast to diet???

I used it occasionally in the '70s when I didn't want to waste my brief lunch break eating a real lunch inside. Sat outside in the sun with a can of chocolate. Those were the days--I was thin and fit and never thought about dieting.

    san francisco parking

Bless their marketing dept. Keep in mind that "Hilton Union Square" sounds like a euphemism to me. It may not be technically in The Tenderloin but at minimum is borderline. For just a few days, I'd pay the $51 tariff. How about renting from the closest place on, um, Union Square;) and fuguring...

    Jack LaLanne

When we were kids we stretched and jumped around to his half hour b+w TV program. I loved the part where he would say, "beginners stop!" I'm a perpetual beginner. Whenever I've had enough of anything, I still hear his voice, "beginners stop."

    Watch out for Amazon !

I occasionally sell books through Amazon Marketplace. Twice their robot would not let me list at my chosen price. One, a signed out-of-print paperback novel of interest to tourists & residents of my hometown, in so-so condition, could only be listed above $12.00; the other, an apparently...

Oh Boy - Jazzfest here we come

Oh boy! Your title is so right. We saw Arlo in '88 or 89ish at the Greek Theater with some even older performers, IIRC (or wasn't overcome with second-hand smoke) Pete Seeger and remnants of Peter Paul and Mary and maybe Mamas and Papas. We thought it was our last chance to be among (other)...

    Do You Love Your City?

LOL! Me, too. It is impossible to love my entire city, think Bonfires of the Vanities or Let the Great World Spin. But I'm totally in love with my neighborhood. My idea of travel is to visit other lovable hoods within the city or nearby burbs and islands.

    Yeah, weird, I know.

Too soon to tell. :(. We may be seeing the start of a beautiful new career--as a writer or motivational speaker.

what did you do today? (2008-2015) (closed)

Today's the day to get the X-Mas tree ready for the wood chipper. Plan is to have it on the curb ready for pickup tomorrow; if I hurry, it'll be there for the five o'clock dog walkers. :whistling:

    Free Stuff Friday

No, it's in iPod iBooks. I read there only in short bursts, hopefully before the eyes go blurry. Still can't transfer iTunes liner notes to iBooks, I'm guessing it can't be done (yet) maybe because of copywrite issues.

    Extreme Couponing

Their coupons get my attention. Sometimes they add a $5 coupon to the receipt to be used unrestricted on the next visit. I actually make a point of using those coupons. Hardware store does the same thing. My price is $5, apparently. :)

I believe film clubs are local. I got into the most lucrative one by info in the fine print of a ticket stub. Tonight there is a free offer to see a preview of Showtime's "Shameless" including soda and popcorn. (A 20-min. preview is also available online without the snacks). Also I once...
