    Purchasing New Home After FIRE

@DFW_M5, I'm glad to hear about this because I want to pay cash for my new house and own it outright. I don't mind having a lien on the old one. It is a psychological "debt-free" thing. If I rent out the old house for a short time, that loan will factor into the expense side of the investment...

    Purchasing New Home After FIRE

Wait a minute! :D When I say I'd let the agent do everything, I don't mean that I'm hands off. I mean that I move first and let my agent hire repair/staging people and manage it as a rental, if necessary. I approve everything that costs money and needs HOA involvement doing the preparation...

    Purchasing New Home After FIRE

Nice. Clipped to Evernote!!! The calculation makes me appear quite credit worthy. I'm looking to buy first because I hate being in my home when selling. I like to move and let my agent take care of all of the preparations.

Living on Texas coast? Any advice

Interesting thread since I just decided to move to the Houston area and prefer South Houston to be closer to more of my relatives. I wasn't planning to move all of the way to the coast but I am going close.

    Purchasing New Home After FIRE

Planning to sell and buy a new home out of state YE2014. (Mom passed away and I need to move closer to other family.) My current home is paid off and in a seller's market. My new home should cost 75% or less than what I should get for the current one so I'm not planning to have a mortgage...

Robot floor cleaners for the home

Ditto. I've had to refurbish them occasionally -- replace various parts and to a THOROUGH cleaning but once that is done, they work very well The thing I like most is that they force me to reduce clutter and stay tidy because they will get trapped on socks, papers, rubber bands or anything...

    Lifelong Learning Demographics

I think having the time to take the classes is a factor. Some people are w*rking or too tired from it to take classes, IMO.

    Do you have enough ?

My parents died "young" (78 & 86) but their parents & grandparents lived to 100 and beyond. My 97 year old uncle just lost his second wife (only 88 ) and he is looking to remarry. :D He is spry and just passed his driver's test. I hope to live well past 100.

    Stable Value Funds

Yeppy. I lost mine when I converted my 401K. The very next day after making that mistake, I tried in vain to reverse it.

    How Retirees Pay Zero Taxes

I had the same understanding since the IRS already knows most of the income of everyone else. Don't many charities disclose donor information? I figured that the IRS already knew about MegaCorps's employee charitable deductions so we were only confirming what they knew and adding more on our...

    How Retirees Pay Zero Taxes

Interesting. Mom, an ordained minister, tithed to her death in April and I'm not positive about Dad but churches and other charitable organization spoke of his generosity at his funeral 12 years ago. I remember once in the 70s my parents was audited. It resulted in them getting a lot of money...

    Poll:Has Your Home's Value Rebounded?

That is what my Uncle says. He has watched his California property value wildly fluctuate for 40 years. Since he owns it outright and doesn't plan to move, he doesn't care. I love my house but I might move and/or purchase a winter place in the next 5 years so I'm watching property values...

    How Retirees Pay Zero Taxes

I should let this go because it is off-topic but I've never allowed my words to be twisted - unchecked- and don't intend to start now. Read my post again - I said donating time AND money is American. Picking and choosing parts of my post to support an erroneous interpretation is your choice...

    Poll:Has Your Home's Value Rebounded?

Agreed. It is especially sad when the 70 year old woman never had children! Fortunately, there are a few states where you get a tax reduction at 65 but there are a lot of conditions which make too many people over 65 ineligible. (I'm not in the zero tax camp either. )

    How Retirees Pay Zero Taxes

You attacked me personally -- twice (calling me "holier-than-thou” and judgmental). That, IMO is very different from expressing an opinion or judgment about an issue or a fictitious individual as I did. I could have "ignored" you for doing that but I hoped you'd get the message when I called it...

    How Retirees Pay Zero Taxes

My bad. I must have misunderstood when you stated this. Too bad I rubbed you the wrong way but like I previously stated, I never attacked anyone PERSONALLY. At the risk of Porky coming out, I appreciated that both of our POTUS candidates donated well above 10% of their earnings to charity...

without electricity for 48 hours now

I had the 7kw Generac unit mentioned in this 2011 post and happy I did. After spending a considerable amount of time shopping, it ran me about $3800 (unit- $2300, installation- $1500). It resides on the side of my house farthest away from bedrooms -- closer to the kitchen and formal dining...

    How Retirees Pay Zero Taxes

You've never heard of "tithing?" That explains it. It is well known among Judeo-Christians but practiced by many others. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tithe Please do not congratulate me. Publicly disclosing how much I personally donate is not something I do (only on tax forms). I didn't...

    How Retirees Pay Zero Taxes

Since you shared... Some people don't want tax dollars to be used to help unfortunate people and expect charities to handle it. It concerns me when people who donate little (comparatively speaking) to charities AND don't want to pay taxes. I respect people who strive to pay 10% of their...
