Poll: Does Anyone Smoke Cigarettes Anymore?

I would think it's to the point now, that the inconvenience of smoking, would come close to overcoming the addiction.

Poll: Does Anyone Smoke Cigarettes Anymore?

Smoking in public areas has all but vanished. I recall when large public buildings had those large cylindrical, trash can like ashtrays, filled with sand where people deposited their cigarette butts. Seems they had them placed every so many feet apart. Ashtrays were everywhere in some shape or...

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) 2017 - 2020

Used to be an advantage to have a strong antenna to pull in pro sports teams from outlying stations. But that has been negated now, with nearly all teams migrating to regional cable networks. The only thing differentiating OTA networks today on local stations is the evening news.

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) 2017 - 2020

The way I figure it, YouTube has over a decade of experience streaming billions of videos, and has done it reliably. That alone was a big factor in making my choice. So far, I haven't had one problem. Looks and sounds just like cable.

Update on Cord Cutting (Cable TV) 2017 - 2020

I just made the switch to YouTube TV. I live in far southern IL, where the St. Louis Cardinals have the largest fanbase, including me. Comcast, as we know, is part of NBC. On their system here, at the start of baseball season, Fox Sports Midwest (Cardinals channel), is suddenly dropped and...

    Military pension question

I think it has more to do with the ex-spouse, and their motivation. Most of these provisions of the law require a knowledgeable attorney and a judge to sign off on them. I'm sure a vindictive ex could manipulate these laws to the extreme, while a more passive ex may well leave easy money on the...

Am I The Only Boomer Who Hates This ?

I don't have a problem with casual dress. However, I don't think it's too much to ask to wear a shirt with a collar, and trousers other than jeans. The funny thing is the Millennial t-shirt and jeans has become almost like a required uniform for them. Where you never see a variation thereof...

    Internet news comments

Where I live, there's a reviewer on Google, who has given just about every restaurant in town one star, with the one sentence comment: "This place is nasty".

    Internet news comments

Sports related sites are the worst. It's like an 8th grade locker room. Another are the forums on the IMDB movies site. You're going to have this anywhere there's little or no moderation. Considering the size of the site and number of articles, it always amazes me how well the Wikipedia talk...

    Blended Retirement System-US Military

Yes, living in an area with a high concentration of active duty personnel, and retirees and veterans would certainly change ones perspective. Where I live, most of the vets are the few WWII guys that are still alive, and some Korean and Vietnam vets here and there. I've never met a veteran...

    Blended Retirement System-US Military

Maybe a half century ago the military pension system was well known, but this is 2016 and a public ignorant of anything that doesn't directly involve them. As an example, for years when asked what I did in the Navy, and I replied I was an air traffic controller, a reasonably intelligent...

    Bullying

We continue to try to eliminate all sources of conflict out of children's lives. You see the result in the Millennials. And they're just the tip of the iceberg as to what is forthcoming. Modern day child rearing makes Dr. Spock look like a Drill Sergeant.

    Blended Retirement System-US Military

If I understand, the immediate pension at the end of 20 years service is still intact. Albeit at a reduced rate. The biggie would've been making the retiree wait until age 60 or whatever to receive their pension. There were some political power brokers trying to push that through. I've learned...

Who are you not speaking to?

Facebook has to be the most consensual invasion of privacy ever invented. Of all the useful things the internet has brought us, it has to be the most worthless. Everybody wants to be noticed. And the folks with 1000+ friends who post the most intimate and detailed pictures of their family. I'm...

    Just a rant

I heard this 22 years ago, when I retired from the Navy. In general, people just don't like someone in their 40's not working. In my case, it's even worse in a small blue collar town, than in an upscale urban area where people don't pay much attention to how people derive income. The worst was a...

Self-Driving Cars -- Needs of the Many vs Numero Uno

One big incremental improvement they could do with this technology right now, is to have mandatory cruise control on the open rural interstates, where the car maintains the speed limit. The big danger today is most people seem to drive either 10 mph over or under the speed limit. With no one...

Self-Driving Cars -- Needs of the Many vs Numero Uno

I foresee a lengthy transition period, where driver less cars share the roads with the conventional driven ones. Probably reminiscent of the early 20th century with horses and cars sharing the roads. It won't be pleasant.

    Automobile suspension alignments

My line of thinking with newer cars, is that all the required maintenance that was drilled into our heads 50 years ago, in many cases no longer applies. Other than fluid changes, I don't do anything unless something doesn't feel right, or is making noise. Repair facilities, dealer or...

The Atlantic Article on Lack of Savings

This guy doesn't have the celebrity quotient to generate must appeal. There would be a small demographic that would buy the book. Which ironically, is probably the issue with all his books, and a big reason why he can't measure up financially to his lifestyle of choice.

The Atlantic Article on Lack of Savings

Public records have always been accessible. However, in the past, it required a lot of leg work. Now, a Google search will reveal websites that provide this service online for a fee. Anybody can access public information on anyone. Namely; judgments, liens, bankruptcies, divorces, and criminal...

The Atlantic Article on Lack of Savings

Bingo! That's the reality of the real world. The fact that the guy has a huge IRS lien (the worst possible creditor to have) from 11 years ago, and is still living life unscathed, speaks volumes. Intellectuals like himself know how to work the system, while the poor and uneducated live under the...

The Decline of Amazon Prime (how clever these marketeers)

My experiences as well. Perhaps those complaining are of a younger generation, that don't recall the inconvenience and impractical nature of the old mail order routine. In order to be willing to endure the ordeal, the item had to be something rare that one couldn't find in a story anywhere. As...

    Do cord-cutters pay more everywhere?

Major professional and collegiate team sports are greatly reduced on OTA networks, from what was available a decade or two ago. About the only serious fans that can survive without cable, are those who follow an in-market NFL team. The NFL has contracts with the OTA networks to show these games...
