    How is your eyesight?

I still have a ways before 50, but I've always had pretty good vision and just took it for granted. That is until a few months ago and my left eye suddenly went from not even needing contacts to having double vision and the inability to read a computer screen. Was diagnosed with keratoconus in...

What do you think of these balanced funds?

    Good call, my mistake.

What do you think of these balanced funds?

OAKBX is a fantastic fund, but is closed to new investors, unfortunately. So, you can take that one out of consideration unless you currently own some already.

    wierd, severe hip pain

Not that this will help your pain any, but I experienced the same thing a few months back. It actually stuck me in the middle of the night out of nowhere. I couldn't move, and the pain was so intense I was virtually in tears and almost ready to have my wife take me to the hospital. I decided...

    Advice for My Close-to-Retirement Parents

I work with a lot of retirees, or those who are approaching retirement, and I keep this book list on hand when the question comes up: Don’t Retire, REWIRE: 5 Steps to Fulfilling Work that Fuels Your Passion, Suits Your Personality, or Fills Your Pocket by Jeri Sedlar and Rick Miners. Life...

Moms' new battle: The food price bulge

Same here. Obviously, some parts of the country will experience different price changes, but I just went shopping today and a loaf of bread was $1.39, dozen eggs were $1.49, and a gallon of milk was $3.19. None of these items were on sale. Been shopping at the same store for about 3 years, and...

Moms' new battle: The food price bulge

Wow, who would have thought that you can save money by keeping leftovers instead of throwing everything away for the sake of convenience. Maybe the higher prices are good in a sense that it will force people to use some common sense and stop being as wasteful.

<1 carbs: What does this mean?

I believe that is just a less than sign, meaning less than 1 carb.

Did you feel the earth move this morning?

There was just a 4.5 aftershock about 10 minutes ago. Some people in the office were freaking out, but it really wasn't more than a slight rumble.

Did you feel the earth move this morning?

Woke up when my dog barked and felt what seemed to be a truck driving by, but didn't think anything of it and went back to bed. We're in the South Bend, IN area.

    Plasma Or Lcd?

I have a 19" Trinitron that I can't even pay to get rid of :(

    Plasma Or Lcd?

Both types of tvs today are great, but if I was in the market for a new one, it would be plasma. They consume slightly more power and are a tad heavier, but the wider viewing angle and more true black give it the edge--at least for anything 40+ inches that is being used as a primary tv.

    Money Markets

You're exactly right. The only example (that I know of) where a fund's NAV fell below $1 was in 1994 when the Community Bankers U.S. Government MMF was liquidated and investors got back 96 cents on the dollar. It was an institutional fund, so technically, no individual investors likely lost any...

Morningstar premium membership: Who's got it?

I'm a subscriber, although I treat the subscription fee as a business expense. But I do think that a lot of the information is very helpful. Sure, you can do without it and find good information elsewhere, but it is up to you whether or not you get your money's worth from it. If you have the...

    Money Markets

Most money markets are perfectly fine for keeping liquid assets, but you do have to keep in mind that these are not FDIC insured. Also, note that money market funds use a 7-day average yield rather than a typical annual percentage yield you'll see on deposit accounts. If the fact that it isn't...

Does your vegetable plot break even?

A garden can be costly if you do it wrong, but it can also yield great results that save you a ton of money if done right. We have just a basic 100 sq. ft. or so plot that we use, and it only costs around 25-40 bucks a year to run, and yields more tomatoes, peppers, and herbs than we can use...

    401K shenanigans

I would certainly get a copy of the SPD and see what they say in there regarding distributions. The rep may have quoted the periodic distribution incorrectly to start with, which isn't uncommon. So, I'd do a little more checking, with your employer and the plan provider, as information like this...

    401k Question

Well, that really depends on the plan. The costs may be higher due to additional expenses needed to cover plan administration, but in a lot of larger plans you'll see just the opposite if they are using institutional class shares versus regular/investor class shares. In regards to the original...

Financial Literacy Impossible for the Masses

My wife is one of these people who isn't lacking in the intelligence department, but it is impossible for her to understand anything about finances. She might be a great attorney, but even though she spends money every day, she has the faintest idea about the most basic concepts. We were...

    Silly Question about Cruises

I think you have outlined most of the added cost associated with cruises, and the incidental transportation, gifts, and possibly insurance that were mentioned above are a few others to consider. And of course, drinks. You can typically get a cheap non-alcoholic beverage package, but if you enjoy...

    Squandering Time?

I know a lot of my time is certainly squandered at work, yet rarely when at home. Nothing like waiting for meetings to start, checking pointless email, chatting with co-workers over a cup of coffee about the new reports everyone has to submit... Just being able to avoid the requirement of going...

    Certificate Of Deposit rate

That is a good point. If the spread between long and short term rates is large enough, taking the penalty could actually still leave you ahead in the event of changing rates.

    Certificate Of Deposit rate

Last year with interest rates relatively high and with the likelihood of going down in the coming months to a year, you probably did the right thing by locking in the best rate you could find at the time. But when rates are low, it could be better to create a laddering strategy so that you don't...

Wow what a storm is around these parts!

I can't wait for storm season to start around here. I'm a Skywarn spotter, so I love when the storms begin to fire up. At least you still have power. We will lose power when more than a drizzle comes down it seems.

    Certificate Of Deposit rate

Unless interest rates see an increase between now and October, then no, it is unlikely that you'll be able to get the same, or a higher rate. The bank or credit union may have some wiggle room that they can use to try and keep you as a customer, but it is unlikely that you'd be able to get a...
