Buick is doing very well in China as part of the GM joint venture with Shanghai Automotive. In 2007, sales of Buick in China were close to US sales. In 2008, China Buick sales exceeded Buick sales in the US.
The joint venture's Buick operation started with the US Buick Regal, then began modifying it more each year for the China market.
Supposedly, a big reason GM decided to can Pontiac versus canning Buick, was Buick's great name and sales in the Chinese market. In China, the Buick stands for quality, and the cachet of having arrived at the personal position of having enough Yuan to afford one.
