Yet I often see it, even here in this esteemed group, written as "FED." Is that an acronym for something, and I just haven't figured out yet?

Yeah, the Fed is Federal Reserve. It's not really an acronym, just a short-name.

Thanks, that's what I thought. It's just that when it's written in all-caps one assumes it's an acronym or abbreviation, like SEC or IRS.
