However, I understand rail in some countries is either very sloooow or nonexistent almost (like Croatia). Anyone here have real world knowledge of that?

Can only tell you that 12 yrs ago we took a train from Frankfurt to Prague to Krakow to Warsaw to Berlin. We had to debark at the German-Czech border. My comment to DW was that in walking 50 feet we went back 50 years in time. Deutche Bahn was clean, nice and new. Czech rail ... less so. Much less. I swear that some of their rolling stock we pre WWII. Nasty.

It was NICE to get back to Western Europe.
