I tried looking this up to no avail. I am curious what type of format movie makers use. Do they record onto some sort of tape still, or does it go onto a digital drive on the camera? Memory cards?

Just wondering

Hmmm. Interesting question. Also a fairly difficult one to institute a search on. You may want to start here, if only to get the terminology identified.

I thought a lot of it was still film. Is 72mm still considered the latest?

And some movies are recorded using digital video cameras - even the HD ones - still use tape.

There must be something about the storage density of tape that still makes it preferable. Video is sequential access not random access - maybe that is also the difference.

I know that my tiny little hour-long DV tapes are the equivalent of 9GB of storage.

I thought MPEG was the output format for the resultant video - at least that is what my final video format usually is. My camera does not record in MPEG.
