This is truly an excellent forum and I've been here a while, but it seems time to say Hi!

I've read a few Rich Dad books a few years ago which inspired me to look into Early Retirement as a very interesting option!

I have no idea how to do it yet, am well-skilled in living below my means & have already given FI/RE advice to friends living from day to day ;) , but still have lots to learn!

Ideally, I'd *finally* finish that book & become the next JK Rowling, or get great royalties for my songs, or Art - but we'll see about that!

Things holding me back: insecurities, shyness, not knowing if I'm 'good enough' (=perfectionistic tendencies), not having found the most environmentally friendly paints yet, and parents who wish me to settle down and marry, while not earning too little or too much (they still think too much money is sinful! Catholic AND living in an ex-socialist country!) - in the artsy world, either of those is more probable!

Even I sometimes feel guilty because of the large amounts of money some artists/singers/songwriters earn (yes, I was the last generation of Tito's youth) - but hey, with lots of money you can do lots of good things too, and inspiration is priceless anyway, isn't it? As is giving people a good time, providing escapism and relaxation.

I'm 31, debt-free (always have been), with just a little bit put aside & completed University education which enables me to get jobs I don't want (language teacher/translator; my parents' wish mostly), currently contemplating on how to pursue my artsy interests more heavily, and earn enough for a living and putting money aside for RE at the same time!

Generally there seem to be 2 approaches - the 'Madonna' way of going for the Music with all strength, or 'Lord of the Rings' approach - Tolkien was a professor, writing as an 'aside'. The latter would be preferred by my parents and even part of me, but I haven't been able to find a job that would allow me to create easily alongside, so I've alternated months of working and months of creating.

It would really be interesting to hear from anyone going for FI/RE, or having accomplished it, from an artsy perspective!

Here, some artists think money is a dirty word!! (& others truly seem to sell their soul for it!) & yes, I draw the line in wearing lacey underpants and-not-much-else in public! (my friends would de-friend me if I did!!)

Anyway, it's really inspiring so many on this forum have made it to FI/RE, or are well under way!! Looking forward to learning from you all!!

Hello Freeline!

One small piece of advice. Although I'm a relatively new member here, I've learned that mentioning Robert Kiyosaki in any way, shape or form will bring wrath from most members here.

Be careful! :)

Hello and Welcome

I think that you will find that there is much more than Rich Dad, as Eyerishgold mentions.

As a majority of the people on this forum are Americans, money is not a dirty word here so you will have plenty of people to talk with. But the people here aren't willing to make many compromises, which is why they want to retire early and get away from the working world. For them money is not an end but a means to do what they want, surfing comes to mind.

Anyway, welcome and look around.

Hello from a Texan,

Welcome! Wow all the way from Slovenia! Being debt-free gives you a good foundation to build the rest of your life. A good solid well-planned FIRE can support decades of artistic endeavors. I don't have an artsy bone in my body, but I am sure there are others who will come along and tell you about their artistic passions!

Again, welcome!

Hi,
regarding your ambitions as artist, you might want to look into the book "The Artists Way" by J. Cameron . See The Artists Way > Official Julia Cameron Website, The Artist's Way > Welcome.
She seems to have a reality based approach and a step by step program to make ambitions come true.
I have learned from friends who are close to the arts scene that networking and a business-like approach create success more often than high flying ideas.
Chris

Hi freeline, a few questions for you: which area of art are you most interested in? You alluded to writing, songwriting, and art, but that seems like a pretty broad spectrum. Also, what type of work environment do you prefer? Do you like working by yourself, having full creative control? Or do you like working as part of a team? Do you like working in a studio setting, or an office setting (I think I can guess the answer to that one, but just in case :)).

Anyway, welcome to the board.

Welcome, Freeline!

I think you're our first Slovenian!

Check out the Young Dreamers board since you're only 31, as well as all the other boards.

Welcome Freeline!

Slovenia is by far my favorite country in Europe. I wish you good luck combining your ER and creative plans. Slovenia having EU membership now should also open your options.

Welcome to the group!

My parents are from Croatia and I still have many relatives there.

Thanks for the warm Welcome, everyone!!

I'm really impressed you actually know Slovenia, we're a tiny country, often confused with Slovakia or such.

Eyerishgold, love your nickname!! (Are you of Irish descent?)

BSSC,
Yes, I agree money is a means to an end - & I've heard surfing is fun! ;)

Thanks for the warning! ;)

Yes, I'm aware of Kiyosaki criticism and the website warning about him - in fact, I agree with most of what is said - that he makes it seem 'too easy', especially the own biz and real estate, building guilt in people who haven't managed to do it yet, and puts too much fluff in his books, with little 'real' substance.
Still, I heard from at least two other people that got initially inspired about learning more about money from him.

TexasGal, love your avatar!!

Calgary_Girl, that is so interesting you have parents from Croatia!
When I was little we went to Croatia to the seaside, it is beautiful there.
I admire their environmental movement, much stronger than in Slovenia.

Neeps,
Wow! A Slovenia-fan! Glad you like my country! When were you here?
Yes, being in EU opened many doors... (It's not all ideal, eg some environmental laws were actually stricter before, and our politicians seem to want to 'suck up' to the EU too much, but it is nice to be able to travel, study or work abroad more easily.)

CompoundInterestFan,
I have a SF novel to finish, a bunch of songs written, and painting has been mostly on the side burner. Having too many interests is actually a part of my problem!! (Not really sure what to focus on most.) I think I'm what Barbara Sher calls a 'scanner' - Renaissance-type-of-person with many interests.
I've worked in an office before and liked it (writing articles from PR statements), but it really depends on the people (and surroundings) and what one does (didn't like too literal translations with too hefty deadlines in another job) - I like having peace and time to do my thing, but I like some contact with people too (like when I worked in tourist informations for a summer). I do need to do something I believe in (alternatively, I convince myself it's all 'research' for a book etc.)

When writing, I need peace and quiet, but also need contact with people (lots of my songs came from exhausting times spent partying with friends etc.) and I like some feedback. I used to watch TV while writing some of the time (but only if I'm in charge of the remote), got inspired for some short stories this way.
(Uhm, that's probably not what you were asking )
I might go to London & get a job in reception or something like that to balance off my time alone behind a computer this last year...

Tangomonster,
Glad I'm a first Slovenian onboard! (Maybe some more will volunteer after this?;)) I've looked into the Young Dreamers section already - that's definitely what I am, a Young Dreamer! LOL - though I haven't posted there yet!

Chris, I will check out that website!
I've heard the book mentioned on a songwriting site too, people said good things about it. Are your friends painters or...?

Anyway, thanks again for the warm welcome & I definitely will look around!!

Chris,

I really love the website!! & Julia Cameron herself is really inspiring!! She did soo many things too!! (& was married to Martin Scorsese, WoW!!)

So I registered at the forums there too, and am looking forward to reading more!

Big thanks for posting the link to the site!!

by freeline: TexasGal, love your avatar!!

freeline, my avatar might change along the way, but after all, I feel like we are all on the rainbow road to and through ER so it seemed appropriate for the moment.

I look forward to reading your posts!
