(Beyond) Ready for Another Chapter...

Greetings. I think I'm at critical mass and I am bored stiff with my job, although I realize I am very fortunate to have it. But in thinking about what else to do with my life, I realized I have devoted my life to my job for 30 years, so I don't have a clue what else I'd like to do. Am in the process of determining "what I want to be when I grow up" but will stay where I'm at until I know. Looking forward to learning a lot here...

I know the feeling. A friend of mine who retired about the same time I did went through the same phases it seems. First year was like being on vacation, second year I was helping a friend build an airplane (his project was helping build a house). Neither wanted to commit to a job.

Finally gave up and started looking for a job, but being picky about it, that took two years. I just found out he applied for a job about the same time I did. A short commute, easy work.

I went on a mission seeking what I should do with the rest of my life.

Turned out that hanging around the beach drinking Guinness and looking at girls in bikini's worked out pretty well.

Until the summer ended.

Then I got married, had a son, and bought a fixer house.

Now I have no freaking idea how I'd fit an 8x5 job back into my life. Or 5% of the BS.

My advice (as someone who has been there despite not having 30 years on the job) is to take this slowly. Go on a voyage of self discovery. Read. Attend seminars. Listen to your inner self. Find out what makes you tick. Use it to inject some excitement into your career. Meanwhile, find out all you can about FIRE so you can build a great exit strategy.........
